Tony vaguely confirms that will be a Lamb box set of some kind at some point...

I caught this interview last night. Tony also stated that Peter Gabriel is interested in having a new 5.1 mix of The Lamb with Dolby Atmos. We'll See.

Tony sounds more positive of their progressive catalog.

Judging from the pic they’ve posted—Must mean an urban rap remix of The Lamb!

Regarding the Shrine concert recordings, a commenter on the bestclassicbands.com site had this to say:

Gabriel’s overdubs on the vocals makes the Shrine concert unlistenable. He was much older and of a deeper voice which ruined the quality.
What we feel we have to solve is why the dregs have not dissolved.

Well I always agreed on latter part of that. I remember when it was released and had no idea about the "new" vocals... I literally had to rewind it and listen again, it was like a duet with a different singer. I would not say it was unlistenable, however but I do prefer the version on Wolfgangs Vault of the same show minus the overdubs. Thank goodness for the late great Bill Graham and his archives. In fact the Graham version had IT plus the encores, how could Genesis not have that or source it from Wolfgangs Vault/Bill Graham Presents for the original box set? In my opinion if you have heard that version it shows the overdubs were clearly not needed. Although not perfect it is better at least to me. Having said that if there are some great extras, 5.1 of the live show it would be an auto buy for me.

That version is from a soundboard recording, not a multitrack. So, had they decided to use it, they would not have been able to mix it properly for it to flow seamlessly from the multitrack recording. But between this and using a remix of the studio version with new vocals, they could have gone either way.

Gabriel's vocals are definitely bad on many songs of the original show. Being the perfectionist that he is, I can understand how he would not release that. Still, he overdubbed far more than was necessary, which is something I realised when looking precisely into what was overdubbed and what wasn't. I think original interviews mentioned about 30% of the vocals being new when in fact it's more than 50% and even closer to 75%.

Despite its flaws, I think most of us would prefer the original show for the sake of authenticity. However I don't see Gabriel mellowing with age and letting the whole thing finally be released as is. What I can see happening at best is that they will reissue de 1998 version with overdubs but restore the ending of the show with the newly found complete multitrack.

But that won't be enough for me to buy it if there is no additional previously unreleased material.
I guess we'll have the answer soon. Still hoping to be pleasantly surprised but that doesn't happen much when you're a Genesis fan.

They’re taking preorders before even announcing the contents? That’s pretty bold.

I think it's just Amazon listing the album before the announcement without consulting with the band. I wouldn't blame the band for that, I don't see preorders listed anywhere else. I think it's happened before with other releases.

Yeah to my ears he unnecessarily overdubbed most of it (and the opening minutes of 'Supper's Ready'). I could live with a few patch-ins. For instance on the soundboard, I remember a loud burst of feedback in 'Fly On A Windshield' and forgotten lyrics in 'Carpet Crawlers'. A few other ropey bits. But the 'fixing' went way beyond that.

It's no longer a 70s live recording with that amount of Gabriel overdubbing.

    IMHO

As a novelty I didn't despise the Frankenconcert when it was released in the first Archive set. It was a weird sort of hybrid, almost like "hey, what it PG agreed to a Genesis reunion and they did the Lamb?" The novelty wasn't that strong through and I rarely ever revisit this.

If the majority of this set is the same existing remix/surround mix as the last one, plus the same Frankenconcert...I can't see this drawing me to the checkout line (again IMHO, Atmos is mostly hype to lure existing owners back to the well for another taste). If it was a new mix/master (maybe from the excellent dude behind the excellent VDGG box), and the complete and unaltered concert, I'd probably be tempted. But, tis was tis!

And that's fine. I'm sure it'll sell plenty of units without my purchase.
If you're actually reading this then chances are you already have my last album but if NOT and you're curious:

    “Frankenconcert”

We have a winner! Brilliant, John! Just brilliant!

And yes, they are aiming at me with ATMOS, but the pocketbook says no.

Unless the Frankenconcert gets de-Frankensteined, which I highly doubt at this point, the only interest for me would be the bonus downloadable content (demos & outtakes). I'm not ready to buy the box just for this but I doubt there will be other legal download options for this bonus material.

Apparently there will be a code via which to download 3 demos. Yeah thanks Tony, you're really spoiling us.

The Atmos swings it for me. Only a recent convert, but if you can rustle up the shekels, surround really is a game changer.

I 'want' to get this but I have a feeling it wont live up to my expectations unless those demos and build recordings show up on it. I have those on CD from a record show from jeeesh... 1993?

    Boy Howdy!

And ATMOS is soooooo far above (pun intended) “regular” Surround. And no, it is not just because of the overheads; all of your speakers are utilized to a much better degree because of the ease that the mixing architect can adjust a sound ANYWHERE in the 360 dome of music. So your side speakers and rear speakers integrate with everything else in a more cohesive manner. The overheads are in fact very important and add a realism and excitement lacking in standard Surround.
