And 10+ years less experience. They just need a 2-year bridge. It's not just Dalton, he's got Frank Reich and Josh McCown...both of whom have a wealth of experience at QB position, even if they lack rings.

Not sure I understand the proposed 4th and 20 rule...
A team kicking off after a score can opt to run a "4th" and 20 play from their own 20 yard line with a chance to maintain possession is what it sounds like. Sounds intriguing. A better chance to keep possession and potentially score, with a big risk of giving up points, sort of like pulling your goalie in hockey.

Yes, that's it, in a nutshell.

I believe they calculated that it has a higher success rate than current onsides kicks, and the argument is that it's more of a "football play."

    Than an onsides kick.

I think the NFL is hell-bent on removing the kicking game entirely.

It still involves placing a runner on 2nd base who didn't get there on his own.

If the league eliminates kicking altogether can they still call it football?

    I can't argue with that.

onside kicks are also a pretty big opportunity for dumb injuries, as you've got two teams basically running at each other. I suspect nobody will miss them when they're gone. You definitely need some kind of comeback mechanism though otherwise a lot of people would tune out before the game's over. the 4th and 20 thing is awkward but it would probably work.

This 4th and 20 thing is one of the stupidest things I've heard of and would be worst gimmick in any of the major sports.

They're taking the foot out of ball. Might as well. Should be called Airball.

I suggest you look into MLB's extra innings "ghost runner" rule.

    I agree wholeheartedly!

Behind the offensive line the Panthers have put together, it’s easy to imagine Dalton having moderate success. Might need some wideouts, but, well, some shit ain’t going to be perfect.

    Everything is a gimmick.

I like the 4th and 20 gimmick, too.

It’s a better gimmick than an onside kick.

And, yes, the ghost runner is fundamentally dumb. But my position on extra innings is that there should be ties, so I likely lost any credibility here.

The onside kick is not a gimmick. It's a strategic use of a regular game function/play.

Montgomery should make an immediate impact with the team, sharing duties with De’Andre Smith.

Can a 4th and 20 even compare to this.

At the end of a series of other plays, yes. As a starting point, it's a runner on 2nd base to start the inning, as far as being a regular play.

Exactly. That logic would lead to saying a runner on 2nd base is a regular game function/play.

Amd I', not trying to defend the ghost runner rule, it is also terrible. But this one for me is just egregiously out of bounds.
