Geddy Lee: My Effin' Life biography Nov 14, 2023

... My friend and collaborator on the Big Beautiful Book of Bass, Daniel Richler, saw how I was struggling in the aftermath of Neil's passing, and tried coaxing me out of my blues with some funny tales from his youth, daring me to share my own in return. So I did-reluctantly at first, but then remembering, oh yeah, I like wrestling with words. It's a less physical version of arguing with musical notes, without a Ricky doubleneck breaking my back! And soon my baby-step stories were becoming grownup chapters. Being the nuclear obsessive that I am, I'd write and re-write them, reassessing perspectives in the narrative not just by scouring my memory banks but my diaries and piles of photo albums too. I was piecing together a mystery of a different kind.

I'd then send these improved and even illustrated stories to Daniel, who'd clean up some of the grammar and remove a lot of the swearing (I love to fucking swear), and presto! In a voice that sounded, well, just like me, a presentable, epic-length account of my life on and off the stage was taking shape: my childhood, my family, the story of my parents' survival, my travels and all sorts of nonsense I've spent too much time obsessing over. And Daniel said, "I think you're writing a book. An actual memoir, in fact." To which I replied, "Hmm... I guess I am."

    I can't wait!

EDIT: Just realized I should have titled this 'autobiography', oops!

I didn’t think I would be so interested in a Geddy biography, but I really fucking can’t wait!

I first head Rush when All The World’s A Stage was released. I walked into a record shop to be confronted by 2112 and I was entranced. I bought the album on the spot, loved it to death back then, but somewhere along the way we parted company. I found a nice condition vinyl copy in a second hand store a few weeks ago, and am reunited, it’s still great!

Yep, I just started reading Neil's Ghost Rider for the umpteenth time. I still enjoy it, mainly the travelogue aspects but it will be great to have something new from his bandmate. Get writing Alex, we need one from you too.

Where can we pre-order this bitch?

This should be great! I can't think of too many more prog-related biographies I'd like to read. I'm sure there could be many other fascinating ones, but Geddy's should be a lot of fun to read, and I loved Dan Rather's interview with him and watched it a few times. So this should contain more similar nuggets. Mother-Fuckin' nuggets!

(Lorne, where did this come from? Any info on the publisher?)

Interesting. I hope he will also write about the instruments he used.

Harper, 512 pages. I've had my pre-order in at Amazon Canada for about six weeks, since it was 'Untitled Memoir' with no image or info whatsoever. I don't even remember where I saw the link! But now it has updated to include the cover image and some info. Title is still not fixed, but whatever, they've got until November to get on that!

I wonder if this will be sold through the site that sells the licensed Rush goods like the beer glass? I recently bought a blanket with representations of all the albums on it, and it's pretty cool.

It's available as a pre-order on Amazon in hardcover, Kindle, and Audio CD versions. Doesn't say who the narrator will be. I'm definitely up for an Audible version, ESPECIALLY if Geddy reads it.
