Selling CD Advice

I'll second the suggestion of record convention, depending on the cost of a table. Here in Austin, that cost is ridiculous.

The last record convention I attended was 90% vinyl + 10% posters, ZERO CDs. I'm sure most conventions now are the same, so your chances of selling your CD collection are very slim to none.

When I left Texas to relocate, I took about 50% of my CDs with me and sold the rest to Half price Books in Houston that at least have a market price scanning system that will slightly benefit the seller. But you'll end up losing for the most part. Almost no one buys CDs anymore, much less the prog stuff.

In Baltimore it is about 50/50 and tables were about $40.

A better indication is counting how many copies of a particular title are available. If there are many, that means they're not selling. To quote Rick Harrison of Pawn Stars fame, just because somebody lists an item for a particular price doesn't mean it will sell for that price. He says that to many people trying to sell him items for outrageous prices.

Last year I wanted to get rid of most of my collection but didn't feel like dealing with trying to sell them so I gave them to a nephew. If he wanted to keep most of them or sell most of them either would be fine with me.

Scan away. You said "almost no one," while a bunch of us here (and on other sites) are buying them, and new CDs are being pressed all the time. Amazon sold out of Crown Lands' new CD Fearless, and now it starts at $25 from third party vendors (until they can restock it, but they've gone through it twice now). By your estimate, no such thing should happen.

Meanwhile, those who missed the boat on Tangerine Dream's epic box set In Search of Hades are praying for the reissue that won't be. That sucker sold out and you won't get one unless you want to pay through the nose. Thin Lizzy's new Live & Dangerous box set sold briskly and copies on this side of the Atlantic are all gone.
