The thing with re-mixes is that on the first listen you hear all the exciting differences- and thereafter it sounds like the songs as you've always known them. Better add IMHO.

The Who catalog, as currently available, is so messy. If you go on Amazon and order a CD then the most readily available versions are still the remixes from the 90s. But then the deluxe editions have original mixes, except for My Generation, Quadrophenia and Live At Leeds. Then, I think, all of the original mixes, except for Live At Leeds, are now on download and streaming (sourced from early 2010s remasters that came out on disc in Japan?) but you lose a handful of cool bonus tracks from the 90s discs. You almost either have to spend a ton of money or resort to piracy just to assemble a basic collection.

^ I keep meaning to pick up a vintage vinyl copy of Leeds, just to get back the backwards guitar interlude in “Magic Bus.”

Who's Next, along with DSOTM, seem so overexposed that I can't imagine there being that much interest except among the most rabid fans (there ARE a lot of those, I admit).
Yes some deluxe 2cds restored the original mixes and others didn't. Their catalogue is in an awful mess.
I have found the old Polydor CDs of some albums with the original mixes very cheaply. These are quite well done for the most part. A Quick One has the full album in mono. Not a great recording in any form, but the current remixed CD is very poorly mastered IMHO (and has at least one song in fake stereo, ugh). This older CD is much easier on the ears.
Live At Leeds does sound different in original form- the mix is a bit drier, from memory. Annoyingly the official CD releases of the full Leeds (and Hull!) concert put Tommy onto a separate disc, which is not the order it was played in.
The old CD of Odds And Sods obviously respects the original running order too. The remix adds a load of other stuff but goes chronological, so it's like a different album really. ISTR this is seen as the worst of the 90s remixes as well...
Well, the worst remix apart from this one, which came out in 2002. This remix has parts missing (no bass solo on 'My Generation'!), dodgy edits etc. The old MCA CD is the way to go with this one, I'd say (there wasn't really a CD of the UK mono version until somewhere in the 2010s). It's the US version of the album, and swaps out the (poor) cover of 'I'm A Man' for the earlier version of 'Circles' which is an improvement, really!

I wonder if Roger Daltrey (aged 79) and Pete Townsend (aged 78) get the irony. The 10-CD Who’s Next Deluxe boxset is selling on Amazon for £260. That’s £26 for each CD of music that was first recorded 51 years ago. A year before they recorded Who’s Next, the band released Live at Leeds. One of the key tracks on the live album was Young Man’s Blues, in which Daltrey decries the fact that it is the “old man who’s got all the money”, while the young man’s “got sweet fuck all”.
I didn’t catch the Who at their recent concert at the O2 Arena in London, with tickets costing upwards of £100 I suspect, but I wonder if Young Man’s Blues was played there. Daltrey could then have sung My Generation, with its equally ironic lyrics.

...and I actually have heard ... well, like forty years ago ... that track played on the air, complete with the "fuckall."
I recently heard Mose ("a jazz sage," as Townshend says at Leeds) Allison's version, and found it kind of revelatory. When the Who played that song, Pete started out playing Allison's piano lines. (Of course, he took right off from there...)

Hopefully the download will be much less expensive.
ImportCD has it for sale: $244.27 Thats 19% off = $56.00 off

Does anyone have this? It appears to be out. I'm very interested in people's impressions of the Steven Wilson stereo remix of the album, which appears to only be available on the Bluray disc from the super deluxe box set. Clever marketing.
It's showed up on Tidal, and I'm listening to the San Francisco Civic show right now. Excellent sound, and some fantastic jamming ("Bargain" goes on for 11 minutes, "Magic Bus" for 17).

So, after I dithered about this I lost my job; and a very old friend (like, from high school) decided I had to have it and bought it for me.
I've gone through the two hardcover books and such, and now am listening to the CDs. Crystal clear, I'm hearing things in Who's Next I've never heard before...

One - hope you find replacement work soon .
Two - that's awesome that your childhood chum picked up the set for you. I did a similar thing with The Road to Red box set for a very dear friend and former band mate as he wanted it but could not splurge.
Three - given the live shows/trax, I may need to purchase myself

If you can afford it, let me tell you that the Civic show is legendary -- I have a vinyl disc somewhere of about a third of it, and listened to it (in reduced quality) on Tidal. Looking forward to hearing it in full quality...
Best "Magic Bus" ever!

Amazon has this now on a Black Friday Sale. $199.95. That’s probably going to be the best price now. I canceled my ImportCD order and saved $50.00.
If ImportCD doesn’t ship within 2 weeks, you’ll probably never see it.

Thanks for steering me to Amazon Gary. I was not going to buy it at $300... it was not the money really, it comes down to the music... at $300 that is just under 30 bucks a disc. I know there are extra items but to me you look at that stuff once so it seemed pricey for 11 discs. $200 was a bit more reasonable. Should hit my ears in 3 or 4 days!
Well, in fairness, it's not just the eleven discs ... it's also two huge hardcover books and an odd little box of "memorabilia."

Agreed, I tried to make the same point... once I read the book, look over the program, buttons and remaining goodies, it really comes down to the music. For me that is the teasure here. You know, I may have box set fatigue... I've been buying so many. $200 was much easier to sell me on than $300!... and it will be here in 2 days!
I've been slooowwwwly playing through the discs. Today I went to play the last one (the DVD) and found it wasn't there. Grrrr!
