I need to poke around the Giffoni stuff a bit more...I listened to Dream Walker and it didn't quite rope me in, but it could've totally been my mood that day (the cover definitely threw me ).

Walt, first of all, I haven't listened to the Giffoni link you sent yet... I guess I should, but question? Wasn't Giffoni a hard core noise artist? I have one item from him that's probably at least 20 years old, maybe more... and it's really really harsh, brain searingly harsh! Has he changed directions lately?
Parmerud is a significant artist for me. I'm familiar with most of his work (but the one UM posted I haven't heard and it's been on my empreintes DIGITALIS buy list for while now, just haven't gotten around to it yet). I've heard stories (just stories) that he's not exactly well received in the greater acousmatic space because of his rather flamboyant nature and performances. If true, I have VERY strong opinions about this as I've been a loud (or at least as loud as someone who covers acousmatic music on a random music site like Avant music news) proponent of trying to break the ivory tower silo mentality down and bring it to us "lowbrows". God forbid the pipe smoking, goatee stroking, tweed jacket wearing zombies should get with the program!!! With music creation technology in its current state, I don't believe artists need to rely on Uni's or some state funded entity that can afford expensive equipment to be the sole bastion and gatekeepers of this art. I could go on, but I won't.
Parmerud...yeah man, it's an adventure to listen to him. Open minds Open minds
Here is another entry into this zone. Akos Rozmann is on O'Malley's Ideologic Organ imprint and I was introduced to him about 2 years ago. I have to say he's been the most important discovery for me in terms of... like this is new, this is fresh and, this is some of the most malevolent shit I've ever heard important! (And it's not even new, he passed a few years ago.) The music screams, no... demands a time commitment and a headphone experience but... if your initial predilection is there, you will be changed.

If it ain't acousmatique-It's crap
Thanks for the heads-up on the live shows and introducing me to Barbara Ellison, Francisco López, and your insightful review!

Met Parmerud when he came to UT Austin to do one of our electroacoustic music concerts; would have been around 2000. Enjoy his music a lot, will listen later when I have access to some headphones.
The new album from Olivia Block kind of, tangentially fits in this thread. Regardless, it's been rapidly moving up the list of favorite releases this year. I wrote some weird words about it here:

I'm definitely enjoying the Block
Also, this is tangential but sound sculpter Sawako Kato passed away a few weeks ago at far too young an age. This is a really lovely tribute article:

I blame Wynton, what was the question?

John, poignant article about Kato.Glad you're hip to The Wire mag.Been a newsstand(when i worked in mid-town Manhattan) buyer since 1986 and a print subscriber since 2000 or so.I've kept every issue i bought/received.
I wish the Olivia Block was available on cd but it's excellent.

Couple of random newbies...this one almost lost me on the first track but the second got me over the finish line:

As a whole, Cryo Chamber is kind of "Dark Ambient on Autopilot" sometimes but I do enjoy the Cities Last Broadcast albums, and this one brings a nice little "hauntology-esque" angle to the party...

Hey there,
Are any of you guys on top of the Luc Ferrari re-issues that his publishing company (and his estate) are putting out. They are all "in better sound", there are unreleased things on some of them and there is also going to be (at least) one piece in binaural. The same folks are doing it with the Parmegiani estate too. This is a huge deal for me because, as I'm listening to these, the sound seems much improved (generally speaking) and the stereo mix seems different to me, with different panning.
Both series will have 18 releases each and supposedly will cover everything, including several unreleased pieces. I'm super excited about this!!!
The first four releases for each artist are already up on their respective Bandcamp pages and they are releasing a new one on a monthly basis.
