Agree, DLR's lyrics where fun for the most part but nothing deep and meaningful, just about Ice Cream men, girls and partying. Nothing wrong with that as they where great for VH as that was what they where all about, having a good time. However just 5th grade high school lyrics really.
I'm a big fan of Van Halen, both DLR and Hagar eras. I am partial to the Hagar years as that was my high school experience (1985-1989).
Sam has always invited DLR to jump up and sing a song or two. It's like an open invitation. I get that they tried touring together and it was a fiasco. Those two are like oil and water.
That said, I feel like Sam is a bit of a prick about all of it. Yes, he's a better singer. Yes, the albums he made with VH all went #1 while Dave's did not. But for all Sam's "do it for the fans" pleasantries, he can't resist a dig at DLR when he gets the chance.
DLR responded online to Sam's invite with "I'm ready to go. Let's do this,".
Really, Sam? "if he can remember the words"? Is that necessary? All you had to say was "Dave is always welcome to jump up for a few songs, but the tour itself is already booked and set". Pretty dickish, if you ask me.But Hagar has now seemingly shot down the possibility of Roth joining him on the entire "The Best Of All Worlds" tour. When asked by a fan on social media about Roth's response, Sammy said: "He can come out and sing a song on a show or two, if he can remember the words. He's not invited on the tour NOOO F;()$(.g way. It was to sing a song with us somewhere like a lot of singers guitarist ect are going to do on this tour. I know better than to have him on tour again. Been there done that." Hagar added in a separate comment: "He ain't coming out with me again. Maybe 1 show a song or 2 if he remembers the words".
"Unwashed and somewhat slightly dazed..."
DLR should do his own tribute for VH. Get Steve Vai, Sheehan, and Portnoy, and of course, only DLR era songs.
I never cared for Hagar as much as DLR's vocals, but to each their own. If you like Hagar, however, Bill Maher interviews him over on his podcast on YT called Club Random.
I do think Sammy could cool it with the negative stories of VH and DLR. DLR gets asked the same questions, too but he deflects (in a guilty sort of way). Hagar should deflect; he's told his side and I believe he's credible but it was a long time ago. Move on.
DLR and Hagar are two people who clearly never grew up.
"The White Zone is for loading and unloading only. If you got to load or unload go to the White Zone!"
It's almost like they'd have nothing else to talk about if not for this sort of petty back and forth.
<sig out of order>
He should just put a band together and call it Van Hagar
he was in the band and co-wrote all those songs.
and doesn't need to call it a tribute band.
but i guess he's doing it out of respect for Eddie.
Yeah, but then you would have to listen to Bill Maher.
I get the idea that Sammy really wants Eddie to have a proper tribute. And I agree with him! But I also get the idea that Alex just isn't ready yet, for whatever reason. Whether he's still grieving, or just can't see himself performing without his brother - don't know. But I like that Sammy seems to be respecting Alex's wishes and privacy while still managing to put together some sort of tribute.
Music isn't about chops, or even about talent - it's about sound and the way that sound communicates to people. Mike Keneally
They are here on my birthday. Two tickets for $180, not too bad. My sis has never seen VH nor Sammy so she's psyched for it. The opening act my sis also bought me tickets for in 1982 is Loverboy. We were at Kings Island near Cincinnati and saw Loverboy playing a mile or two away in the summer so she bought me tickets for a late December show.
Looking forward to it. I wonder who might show up.

The opening riff to Turn Me Loose is absolute grandeur. Quiet Riot opened up for the show., then headlined with Whitesnake as the opener, then Whitesnake became the shit and bloody hell, I can't find an opening act for them in '88. I have the ticket stub and nothing is written on it and setlist.fm has no opening acts listed.
Thought I might find some really cool links between headliners and openers but it stops with Whitesnake.

Both DLR and Sammy can be great interviews, and total pains in the ass. But Dave had next to nothing of a voice left. Sammy has lost a few notes off the top but is still in pretty decent shape. I guess Michael Anthony will take a few swings as singing DLR era songs, which should be interesting. He's still got that soaring tenor voice. I'd pay for the ticket if they were in my neck of the woods, but they won't be.
