Steve Hackett, Foxtrot at Fifty + Hackett Highlights: Live in Brighton
Cobra handling and cocaine use are a bad mix.
The new Peter Gabriel or the latest Sigur Ros for instance. Both pretty dissapointing.
But I mainly buy stuff I expect to like. I usually check out samples on bc or Yt before I buy. But there are plenty I found just okay or not for me that I did not include in the list

Special shoutout to the Ring Van Mobius. It's definitely retro, but more ELP-influenced than sepia-toned, short tracks that don't overstay their welcome, great synth choices, dramatic vocals, strong themes that recur at different points. Kind of like Pictures at an Exhibition but original material and no Greg Lake singing DEATH IS LIFE. Have seen very little mention of it around here so wanted to give it a little love, but I do recommend an unhurried, front-to-back listen.
I don’t think I’ve seen Motorpsycho’s 2023 album “Yay!” on anyone’s list. It would be in my top 20, even if it’s a pretty laid-back album.
Ill be compiling a lot of these posts and creating a list to explore next year.
Here are my faves...
Acid King - Beyond Vision
Baroness - Stone
Blood Ceremony - The Old Ways Remain
Church Of Misery - Born Under A Mad Sign
Dødheimsgard - Black Medium Current

As usual I tend to use year end best of lists as buyers’ guides, so I am typically a year behind. I did not buy a ton of 2023 albums this year, but here are a few that I did purchase.
Jason Isbell – Weathervanes: Another great slice of Americana from one America’s best storytellers.
Boygenious – The Record: If Crosby, Stills & Nash were born female about 40 years later, they would sound like this. Anyone who says there is no good pop / pop rock music being made anymore needs to listen to this album.
Transatlantic – Final Flight Live At L’Olympia: Live album & DVD that they say is the end for them. They have said that before, so who knows, but this is a wonderful way to go out.
Christone “Kingfish” Ingram – Live In London: I have had the pleasure of seeing Kingish live several times. His studio albums are great, but live is where he really shines. Essential blues album for 2023.
DiVirgilio, Morse, Jennings – Sophomore: If you liked the first one, you would like this one. These guys’ voices blend like fine wine and the songs are good too.
Steven Wilson – The Harmony Codex: I am still not sure how I feel about this one. It is not his best, but certainly has it’s moments.
The Flower Kings – Look At You Now: When it comes to the Flower Kings you know exactly what you are going to get. Another strong album from one of the most prolific bands on the planet.
Rival Sons – Darkfighter: America’s greatest current classic rock style band. Darkfighter is another fantastic album of bluesey heavy rock.
Greta Van Fleet – Starcatcher: For me this was a slight step down from their last one, but still a solid effort from the kids from Frankenmuth.
Yes – Mirror To The Sky: The best album of the Jon Davison era of the band. It does not rank up with their classics, but still a fine effort.
Alice Cooper – Road: Alice is up into his 70’s and still putting out vital heavy rock. This one was recorded with his touring band. It covers the subject of being on the road. Another great one from The Coop.
Robert Jon & The Wreck – Ride Into The Light: Not his best, but another enjoyable slice of blues / southern rock from one of the most underrated bands in the country.
Nita Strauss – Call Of The Void: Nita is best known as lead guitarist for Alice Cooper’s band, but her solo career is on an upswing. This album is a great slice of modern metal. Nita does not sing, so invited several guest vocalists to the party including Lizzy Hale, Alice Cooper and others.
Mammoth (WVH) – Mammoth II: The apple doesn’t fall far from the tree and Wolfie delivers another album of heavy rock. I liked his debut a bit better, but this is another respectable effort.
Eric Johanson – The Deep And The Dirty: Eric is not that well known, but he is a great blues / blues rock guitarist and vocalist from New Orleans. This is his best album yet.
Ally Venable – Real Gone: Ally is a young blues rock phenomenon who is starting to gain traction under the tutelage of Buddy Guy. This is her best album so far.
Haken – Fauna: One of the best prog metal albums of the year hands down. These guys just continue to deliver.
Samantha Fish / Jessee Drayton – Death Wish Blues: Not as good as I hoped it would be, but a nice mix of Fish’s blues rock and Drayton’s outlaw country.
The Winery Dogs – III: This all-star trio puts out another set of solid heavy rock songs. Good stuff.
Jimmy Buffett – Equal Strain On All Parts: Jimmy’s posthumans final album is a fun listen. Not his best, and there are a few mediocre songs, but overall, an enjoyable way to go out.

I've just gone through this one once(a lot of music) and quite liked it although I'm really into stuff like Sonar, Thelen, Stick Men, Komora type stuff. I will say the one thing that stood out for me during that spin was how active Pat seemed to be on the kit. More so than normal it seems? Much more time required. Love the new Sonar though, I was worried with that electronics guy being part of it but it's all good.

Over 2 hours of music is a lot. I was just glad to read some comments on this one. The other one I'm not hearing any thing about is Hedvig Mollestad Weejuns. From what I understand some structured music that they improvise off of. This is soundscape stuff and did bring Rypdal to mind at times but I liked it a lot more than the Tu-Ner release but again I've only heard that one once, the Weejuns three times.
