Next Opeth album to feature Ian Anderson

According to this new interview with Ian (the Opeth mention is around the 5:20 mark) :

He says he played on 'Three or four' songs just last week. Presumably that means flute only, as I doubt Mikael would see any need for his vocals (but who knows). This would suggest also that the new album would be in the latter stages if they are working on overdubs of that kind. It's funny, because Mikael has said that he tried to get Ian to play on Heritage but Ian never responded to him, which made him half-jokingly say 'Bastard.' I guess times have changed!

    Looking forward to it!

Well.....even Grandpa's gotta have a hobby! Ian was just on Steeleye Spans latest album too. Nice to see he's a gun for hire.

it's quite possible Mike has decided that Opeth needs to return to its progressive death metal roots and like Mike did for Jonas on Katatonia's Brave Murder Day, Ian is guesting on vox for the growls. I never thought of IA having a career rebirth as a death metal vocalist but I see it now.

sarcasm aside, this is great news because I'd love to hear his flute playing on the next Opeth album which is currently underway!

I never tried to growl into a flute but Ian may make something interesting out of it.

Ian’s flute and Opeth is not a combination I would have thought of, but their later albums shifted into a sound where it can work. Remains to be heard what sound they are going for on the album, but I’m looking forward to it as usual.

Ian played flute on two tracks (Souls and Ships That Pass In the Night) on ex-Strangler Hugh Cornwell's Restoration album which was a companion disc to his Monsters album and contained ten reworked Stranglers songs.

Anderson alone isn't a selling point to me. But with Akerfeldt, ANYthing is possible and I can only imagine what he'll pull out of him! Im just psyched they're finally doing a new album, which can only mean a tour to follow!

It should be interesting. While I've kind of lost interest in Ian and or JT I'm looking forward to a new Opeth release and in fact was just listening to Scorcoress last night. The only other guest appearance from Ian I can think of off the top of my way head was way back for the first Blackmore's Night album in 1997.

I have lost interest in both Opeth and Ian Anderson but maybe mediocrity times two adds up to something interesting. I really hope so.

Back in the '80's, Ian guested on a Men Without Hats song (off of the "Pop Goes the World" album - a fun pop classic album imho).

In a 2021 interview, Ian had this to say about playing on that song and guesting in general, and how he does not accept payment for them:

Anderson said," It's a nice tune that I was asked to play on because Ivan the main man was in London recording an album and he must have got wind of me having some positive comments about the Safety Dance. The song was quite a hit in the UK (Safety Dance) and a refreshing one it was almost an abandoned crazy hippy kind of video at a time where everything else was synth pop and rather contrived. This was a fun abandoned wacky song but everybody loved it in the UK and I enjoyed it too. I guess Ivan heard about that and said oh can we get Ian Anderson to play on a song and the record company got the message. So I trotted into the studio in London and recorded it and that was the end of it really. When I play on other people's records I politely refuse any form of payment because I choose what to do I don't do everything and I am certainly not a gun for hire. You can't pay me to overcome my feelings for perhaps this is not the right thing for me to do or that I don't really think I can add anything useful to your song. I have to feel like I can make a contribution. I am more likely to make that contribution if the music is someway away from what I do because then it becomes more of a challenge and I can step out of my normal musical area and tackle something a little different that I have not played before."

Ian has guested on plenty of recordings. One that was a big deal around these parts back when I started high school was this one:

October. Perfect time of year for new Opeth, and I'm loving that gloomy cover and title.

Hopefully in the same style as their previous offerings since Heritage. No growls, I hope?
