I'm just the opposite. Well, maybe not opposite as the all clean singing albums I still enjoy so I like all Opeth, but the progressive death metal records of their earlier era are by far my favorites. Some of those were fantastic tours as well. I never thought Mike would bring back the death metal ingredient to Opeth's progressive rock. LOVE the new track.

That box set is disappointing, but just as well. They kept the price somewhat low considering it includes both LPs and CDs (one of the reasons I shan't be buying it!), but that probably means the box overall, especially the trinkets, is of somewhat low physical quality. What they show looks in some ways similar to the "deluxe" or "limited" or whatever version of Watershed, which IMO seemed a bit slapped together.

Looking forward to the regular CD though!

Agreed although I will listen to see how many songs are infected by the growls to see if its still worthwhile having, we'll see.

I am not huge fan on growl but as the last three Opeth albums have been pretty bland and boring I take their return as a good sign.

More than a little bummed that I can't catch them on this tour, but I have pre-ordered the new album. Figured I might as well throw a new t-shirt on that order, too, so I picked up the gramaphone shirt.

    The t-shirt, alas, is growl-free . . .

Nice. I was thinking about the limited edition box with both LP/CD but honestly we don't have the space...we are running out. The Omerch shop has some really cool T shirt designs that I have never seen before.

Metalheads and fans of early Opeth, from what I've seen so far love this track. But sadly, Symphonic Prog nerds like me who got into Opeth through the albums Heritage and up are quite divided.

I'm one of the fortunate ones I guess. I got into them when My Arms, Your Hearse was the current album, and I've loved their journey ever since.

Cookie Monster Vocals is a no go, if it's just the one track I'll buy it but if not it's a miss.

Not only incessant amounts of growl but eating of nice people's raw livers in the canteen lunchbreaks amidst recording sessions.

This is evil liver rock with a liddabitter flute to go. Live liver.

Livers were in their minds. Opeth fans ate with relish the inner organs of beasts and fowl.

I heard a bit of that video. I just can't help cracking up when I hear those death growls.

With Ian Anderson said to be doing spoken word narration on several of the tracks, including this first one, does anyone actually hear him anywhere? I thought I could detect a little bit near the beginning, alternating with Mikael's first growled vocals, but it's blink-and-you'll-miss-it.

Not a death metal/progressive death metal fan? I remember the first time I played Opeth’s Ghost Reveries album for a close friend of mine. We’d gone to many gigs in SF together over the years, rock, country, prog, but he was not into metal, clean vox or not. So when Mike starts in with the vocals for Ghost of Perdition, my buddy starts to chuckle with a look of extreme incredulousness on his face, like ‘how can this be real?’ Which I understand given I remember listening to a Bathory album one of my college roommates had on hand. Up to that point in my life I was pretty much a prog and jazz guy only. So hearing black metal vox for the first time, I was all about the WTF is this shit reaction haha. But over time I started checking out more black/death/progressive bands and the vocal style becomes just another instrument with a unique sound that you get used to like you would with any style of music.
Another great example in metal would be King Diamond or Mercyful Fate fame. I don’t even know how to describe his singing voice but I love it now mostly because I enjoy the concept albums and am into the music. Check out the albums Abigail or Them.
For the record, I had a similar reaction the first time I heard Jon Anderson of Yes at 12 or 13. It was Going for the One and I still remember my surprise at this alto tenor voice in rock because I had never heard anything like it before. Took me a little while to adjust but in the years since Yes has been a favorite.

My point being, if you like the music, I’m guessing you can become accustomed to the vocal stylings. Opeth is a great progressive band and their music is often incredible.

Listened to the new track. Musically, it's phenomenal. Very proggy. I don't mind the darker hues, but I confess to not being a fan of growls. I completely agree though with Aquatarkus in this vocal style being another instrument. But let's face it, many music listeners have an instrument they don't enjoy listening to. Still, I look forward to hearing more from this album, in hopes the growl vocals are used sparingly.

I’m all for some growls! We haven’t heard any since Watershed I believe. I like Opeth’s later, cleaner, more proggy-prog records, but my favorites has always been the middle, where they combine clean and growls. Deliverance, Watershed, Ghost of Perdition, Still Life.

Will do my best to hold off from singles until October.

^Blackwater Park too, I presume? That album has become my number one, flat out. My fav era is also the SW and Jens Bogren era (2001 - 2008) but I dig the first two and absolutely adore both My Arms and Still Life. Even the production on ICV has grown on me....I think I've finally realized that Mikael was going for some tape saturation vibe on that record. I'm digging this new clean, beefy, compressed production.

IMHO Opeth is fine with and without the different vocal styles: Akerfeldt has a voice that works exceptionally well in both contexts. Musically I'm still struggling to connect with this in the same way I connected with material like Ghosts of Perdition and Deliverance (the song). But I'm down to hear more

On the upside, it did give me an excuse to break out Ghost Reveries for the first time in years. For me personally, that's still their peak. And it also got me wanting to go back and listen to Eden in Reverse by Hail Spirit Noir, which is never a bad thing for a proggy metal enthusiast

For sure Blackwater Park. My Arms is also great.

Lots of Opeth fans prefer that era. I saw them at Tons of Rock in Oslo this summer where they played a fan picked set. It was only an hour, but not a single song from the later part of their catalogue.

    The Grand Conjuration (Ghost Reveries)
Demon of the Fall (My Arms, Your Hearse)
    The Drapery Falls (Blackwater Park)
    Heir Apparent (Watershed)
    Deliverance (Deliverance)

    All longer tracks with growling.

That makes sense. I think most of their fans prefer the old stuff and only tolerated the good stuff ( - I kid )

But because of that I was always afraid they would go back to the growls. I was right. Kind of disappointed. Ah well, will check back, see if they do go back to the stuff I like.

    ALL IMHO, of course

Couldn't find another thread on this. Does anyone know what's on the blue ray edition?
