    March Madness 2024

One of my two favorite months of the sporting year has arrived! Let's talk college hoops, men's and women's. From my state, only the Iowa women and the men's and women's teams from Iowa State would appear to be a lock for the big dance. The Iowa men's team is on the bubble and needs to win their remaining conference game (home against #13 Illinois) and probably at least one in the B1G tournament to get a spot. Men's and women's teams from both UNI and Drake are decent but the MVC isn't strong enough this year to get anyone in but the conference tournament winner. Obviously I've been following the Caitlin Clark story all season, and while it would be amazing to see her go out as a national champion, I really don't see anyone beating South Carolina. BUT, we beat them last year in the Final Four, and this is an event where almost anyone can have a hot game and provide an upset - which is why it's so damn fun to watch.

It's Selection Sunday! At this point from my state the Iowa and Iowa State women, Drake men and Iowa State men are in, and the Drake women are in if they win the MVC championship this afternoon as they are expected. No joy for my hometown teams this year, but still plenty to root for. And judging by the number of upsets in the conference tournaments this year, the madness factor will be high for the next two weeks. Bring it on!

I think Iowa State has a good shot at making it pretty deep into the tournament.

I went with Ucon as my bracket champion. It is a tough call this year, but on paper, I think they are the best of the bunch.

Oakland beating Kentucky was a huge upset. The little team from Michigan has always had a good basketball program, but I don't think anyone expected that to happen.

Practically all Gholke does is shoot 3 pointers. When he is on, like he was against Kentucky, that team can be lethal. If he has an off game though, they are probably toast.

Maryland women had a twenty point lead and lost by seven. The other team had a freshman who shot 18 for 20 in the second half for 40 points.

Does anyone know who won the "March Madness" tournament? They don't do sports on the TV news anymore, and broadcast TV had no coverage after the first few games. I tried googling it but the only stories now are about the women's games. I have nothing against women's college basketball, I'd watch it if they aired it, but it just wasn't what I was looking for information about.

Twice as much interest in the Women's tournament as the Men's diminishes the economic impact of the Men's, here in the Phoenix area. With the free events including the free big name concert series, and free rides on public transport. We may well end up losing money, when all is said and done.

Every time someone says "UConn," I hear "Yukon." As though the Great White North has a team in the NCAA basketball tournament.

the women's tournament drew huge numbers, which seems really huge for women's sports in general. everyone says they don't get paid or promoted because nobody watches, but this year kinda proved that people *will* watch so long as it doesn't air on ESPN 7 or something. fwiw I was way more into it than the men's tournament - would've really been something for Iowa to win that, but SC was just way bigger and deeper, you could tell at the end Clark was just chucking it knowing that was the only chance they had

They've done such a good job of making sure people without cable TV can't watch these games, that I didn't know their nickname or mascot. Thanks for the info. I'll go back to my cave now.
