Chechnya bans all music deemed too fast or too slow

Minister of Culture Musa Dadayev announced the decision to limit all musical, vocal and choreographic compositions to a tempo ranging from 80 to 116 beats per minute (BPM) at a meeting Friday, the Russian state new agency TASS reported.

I just saw this. Hilarious. So much for the budding Chechen Prog scene.

Politicians and especially apparatchiks are really something else.

The UK is going to airdrop Gentle Giant in Chechen territory.

This is f-ing crazy! Right out of Woody’s “Bananas.”

Chechnya is notoriously Muslim. The brothers who bombed the Boston Marathon are/were Chechen. If true, this is likely more of a religious edict than a political policy.

    At the risk of destroying the thread I started;
Why is it "notoriously" Muslim? Why the pejorative? You.could have said "predominantly" or "is majority" instead?

Tim McVeigh was a white Christian nationalist when he blew up the Murtagh Buildjng - guess the USA is notoriously Radicized Protestants then? Is Israel notoriously Jewish?

While your conclusion is likely correct re: religious vs political and this law - how you got there is wrong. Be better.

So no hardcore or gabber and I suppose the Dutch entrance for the Eurovision Songcontest will be banned as well.

And the piece I'm currently working on will be banned as well, with a tempo of 60 bpm, so to slow. Well, the sequencerparts are in 16ths, so I suppose they will be considered to fast.

Shame. We could all use a little more drone metal in our lives.
Please don't ask questions, just use google.

I kinda wouldn't tar all politicians with exactly the same brush as the Chechen regime, who are a bunch of fascist homicidal goons with a side order of religious fundamentalism (when it suits them).

I'm not completely sure what religion has to do with this. Putin fought against muslimfundamentalists in Chechnya and the current rulers are more or less put there by Putin. They play the religion-card when needed, like when gay people are killed, but in the end they are just dictators who support Putin, and are supported by him. Which of cause doesn't mean there isn't a religious component to this ban.

Gotta love the idea of Chechen policemen getting trained how to count BPM.

Except of course that won't happen, and it will in actuality just be yet another a pretext to arrest / brutalise anyone the goons happen to feel is in need of persecuting.

Now it will have a different meaning when police say, "Move it along!"

Chechnya is largely Muslim, although traditionally predominantly Sufi, and the Sufis love their music. Here's a Sufi hadra from Chechnya:

Chechnya is currently ruled by Ramzan Kadyrov, a brutal dictator who initially fought for Chechen independence before switching sides and kowtowing to Putin. His government does all sorts of crazy shit.

Here's a documentary about some more Chechen Sufi ritual music, filmed just over the border in Georgia:

It is quite common that some/many muslims have problems with music (and other things). I Afghanistan and Pakistan you can get nicked, killed for playing or selling music.
My daughter went to school with 2 muslims (female) that were not allowed to listen to music, so they never visited other pupils at home or went to any class-events. This is Denmark.

I would note that Islam is as diverse as any religion. For example, Christians in Tennessee don't act like Christians in Copenhagen. Chechnya isn't Afghanistan or Pakistan and has different Islamic traditions.

Agreed - which is why I'm all for religion ending where a person's skin ends.

I don't feel like writing an essay this time around so I'ma put it simple. I'm atheist/areligious and I think that generally Islam is just dumb, not matter how you decorate it... ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

who are a bunch of fascist homicidal goons with a side order of religious fundamentalism (when it suits them)
Sounds oddly familiar. Polish natoinalists use the Catholic religion as the same kind of swiss army knife to justify them being assholes who hurt others.
