    Barock Project - Time Voyager

As a lover of trad Prog in a modern delivery, this album is it. Finally had time to sit down and listen to it without distractions and it's just terrific.

^ I'll certainly check it out! That's a long album, I just found it on Spotify and it's 71 minutes. I'm listening to a 70-minute album now, but it's improvised space rock, so... But I've been meaning to check out this band, so I'll take the recommendation.

70 minutes is one thing. But 71?

Really enjoying this, thanks for the heads up. This is right up my alley.

I need to get this. I have all of their other albums and think they are the best band to come out of Italy in years.

Beth Gibbons' (Portishead) debut solo album Lives Outgrown is one of the absolute elite of 2024. I wrote a review of the album: https://pienemmatpurot.com/review-be...outgrown-2024/

I haven't bought much from 2024 so far but I was recently listening to the latest by Returned to Earth which is good but really mellow. The latest Steve Hackett is very good too.

Tal Neunder (Italy) - L'albero della vita

I'll quote myself from the Italian Prog thread - it's sick how good this album is.

I'd have to say the new release from Ritual is the best thing I've heard so far this year.

My own favourite album of the year, so far. Nice review.

I've thought it a very subtle album that has a kind of rustic otherworldliness to it. I've found it a very relaxing daytime listen.

Agusa - Noir ...everything I've heard by them I like and this one is real solid as well

Elephant9 - Mythical River ...this band is nicely textured now, though I still love that balls out debut. This one is very cool

Monkey3 - Welcome to the Machine ...these guys have been making albums for 21 years!!! down the rabbit hole I go

Aurora Clara - IV ...another new band for me, but the rabbit hole is only 5 years deep with these guys
Why is it whenever someone mentions an artist that was clearly progressive (yet not the Symph weenie definition of Prog) do certain people feel compelled to snort "thats not Prog" like a whiny 5th grader?

Oddly enough, Geoff Barrow's latest album came out +/- at he same time, and ut's quite OK too:

Not taking anything from the music, but seems to me it is very much in the vein of Greta van Fleet. The vocal completely with the rest not too far off.

Good album (I just bought it following my record shop recommendation). I love the cover art too.
Didn't noticed the Portishead connection though.
Note: the band's name is BEAK> (with the right pointing arrow)

Tatu & Tutkimusmatkailijat - Vasta Alkusoitoa

Anybody heard their previous release from 2020?

Iit's available on Bandcamp, but I don't find it as feather-ruffling (in a good way) as their latest album (which will probably be a top 10 this year)

It is a really good album. Their best IMO. Will make quite a few best of 24 lists.

Yes, I am a fanboy but this album brings Jon Anderson and The Band Geeks center stage in the prog world and is my candidate for album of the year. Incredible song writing and playing bring back the glory days.

Does anyone else feel like this year has so far been a lot of "pretty good" prog albums but no genuinely great ones? The new Jon Anderson album gets fairly close, but still has too many flaws for me to claim it's got genuine masterpiece potential. There's still time, of course, but I've yet to encounter that one album that screams "album of the year" to me.

Well, that depends on how wide your definition of prog is, I think. For me, Sleepytime Gorilla Museum's ...The Last Human Being is screaming album of the year. More in the traditional prog vein, Plantoid's (from Bighton!) Terrapath and IZZ's Collapse the Wave are both excellent. And in the RIO branch of prog Avalanche Kaito's Talitakum is incredible. All of these albums and more I would put well beyond pretty good.

    Just my take.

Sleepytime Gorilla Museum and Present are outstanding this year.

It's all a matter of taste, and as mentioned, one's definition of Prog. I personally think the Tom Penaguin album is pretty great. If it had been released in the 70s, I think it would be heralded as a Canterbury masterpiece.

In general, I find very few, if any, truly great albums in a given year. Most of those I like best I classify in my mind as "pretty good" or "very good" as opposed to "great." This year doesn't seem substantially different to me than most years in this regard. For me, pickings have been a touch slim, but lots of stuff comes out later in the year, so I'm not jumping to any conclusions just yet.
