    You do have a point. I like making animations, so I try to take advantage of a website allowing animated avatars whenever possible to set up a mugshot of some character winking or making silly faces. xd I never put anything too distracting or flickering. But, in the end, it can get out of hand very easily, so not allowing .gif avatars here is justified.
