    2024 Summer Olympics Thread

It's been four years since the last fiasco, time for another. Hopefully this one will have a little more joie de vivre. The venues do seem to be a bit more spectacular. Equestrian is at the Versailles! Opening ceremonies on the Seine! There will be, of course, the usual doping scandals, the IOC will be as always, the most corrupt sports organization in this galaxy. So let's get ready to rumble!

I am still watching way more TV than usual with my knee situation, so looking forward to the games. We have a kid from my hometown in the Decathalon, so that should be fun to watch. Basketball should be competitive. Women's gymnastics has an amazing group from the U.S. Any of them are capable of winning gold.

I hope they show a lot of background-human interest stories as opposed to the actual competitions.

Tennis star Coco Gauff will join LeBron James as a flag bearer for the United States Olympic team at Friday’s Opening Ceremonies of the Paris Olympics, making her at 20 years old the youngest American to carry the flag in U.S. Olympic history.

Thank goodness that twirling a ribbon on the end of a stick is among the Olympic sports.

Isn’t Snoopy Dogg-Dogg carrying the torch too?

He is working on the NBC broadcast team so I don't think he is actually involved in anything, but not totally sure on that.

Did I hear a Snow Palms tune in the ceremony or am I mistaken?

I was surprised that he wouldn't be mentionned about the laser show and music of the Eiffel tower; but he might not be politically correct enough anymore (private life issues, I think)
my music collection increased tenfolds when I switched from drug-addicts to complete nutcases.

It sure looked like something he would do. The sound on my TV was not good enough to tell whose music it was. If you ever find anything giving him credit for the Olympic opening ceremonies, please post it here. I have heard nothing about Mr. Jarre's private life. Media gossip shouldn't detract from his musical and compositional abilities.

My cable just fried itself for some reason during the opening ceremonies.

Kelly Clarkson and Peyton Manning? WTF NBC? At least we got Snoop. Also, the French metal act killed!

I am also interested in what music was used when the torch was taken off the boat and ran around before the the final torch lighting. I loved that bit as well.

I was late into the transmission, having missed the boring part: the delegations on the river and landing on the Chaillot terrasse.

I watched the ceremony as a dilettante (in the corner of my screen) and TBH, most of the music, I couldn't have cared less for, despite being of French culture. I barely recognized 30/40%. and I hated the Celine Dion thing - much like the usual tons of stars invited . They could've chosen so much better. TBH, I also hated much of the speeches, to the "grandeur de la France".

Just like have the "flying flame" so far away: it could've been done in front of the Eiffel Tower, with the flame being carried over the stairs. it seems that the flame carriers were certainly less athletic (the pace) than in previous fgames ceremony.

BTW, the iron horse on the river was done in Nantes (some 5 kms away from my mom's place)

BTW, 120 cameras were unoperable dur to the heavy rains.

Agreed on media gossip, but I think there is a legal investigation (like on many french media heterosexual male stars), and given the woke/LGBT side of the show (the fashion parade), there was probably many pressures about who to include in the preparation. And even if there was really a JMJ boycott, the Eiffel laser show made everyone think about him, to the point that some/most will see it as an homage.

You can bet there is going to be major media outrage today about the last flame carriers being both black.

They played Debussy: Prélude à l'après-midi d'un faune and some Ravel piano music.

For those of you who enjoy the Olympics and have Peacock they have the “Gold Zone” channel that is very similar to “Red Zone” during the NFL season where they cover up to 4 live events at once and switch back and forth when critical things are happening in events. Checking it out for the first time this morning and digging it.
