New Jinjer song- Someone's Daughter

Just out two days ago- very strong bass playing here by Eugene Abdiukhenov, and of course, Tatiana doing both clean and growls, with some really strong lyrics. Parts are in waltz time, too, but this veers more toward prog than it does metal, in my opinion.

Hi, Duncan- this song is more prog to me than it is metalcore or djent, as it moves through several time signatures and has that great bass playing. And hey, if a few people listen and enjoy, that is enough, y'know? I am getting evangelical about them, and some of the songs- Who is Going to Be the One, Teacher Teacher, Judgement and Punishment, I speak Astronomy- are killer songs. Tatiana is one hell of a singer, both in her clean vocals, and in her startling growl.

Duncan, I am going to have my thyroid removed on Thursday- had the left lobe removed 6 weeks ago, biopsy results were not as positive as thought, so to be safe they are going to take the right as well. And I retire on August 31!

I saw Jinjer back in April at the Marquee Theater here in Phoenix. I thought they were great! I was probably one of the older people in the audience, but they had a packed house and played their butts off. Tatiana was an impressive singer, both with the growls and with her "normal" singing. I'd go again.

One interesting thing is that the band that opened for them, Evermorphing, is fronted by Jinjer's previous singer, Maks Fatullayev. I chatted with him a bit after their set, friendly guy and obviously cared about the ongoing situation in Ukraine.

Aggie, that entire show is available on youtube! And their original drummer is now managing them, too. All of them are huge Ukraine supporters and the men in the band have been given an okay to represent the country around the world.

Jinjer is such a talented lady. I also agree that some prog fans just won't get on board with any type of extreme metal, and vice-versa for metalheads and prog. Folks like their comfort zones.

Dana, I'm glad to see you say that. Sadly, MOST "prog fans" turn off the moment things get a bit metallic, and as soon as there's even a hint of .

I remember our conversations at your place the last time we rode together (and before you moved) - my new favorite at the time was Subterranean Masquerade - but you didn't seem to be interested in them. That guy we met on the bus, who recognized your Magma music (he's the local manager for Inside Out records), also recommended them. I'd urge you to re-visit them - here's a YouTube vid of their best (IMO) album. They're Israeli, pretty progressive, kinda metal - though not as hard-core as Jinjer, and I found them to be very enjoyable.

And congratulations on your retirement! Do you have any plans for how you'll spend your free time? I'm (sadly) waiting until age 70 before I retire. (2 years, 10 months, and 8 days ... IF I was counting )

Hi, Duncan: I had my surgery yesterday, am home now with the world's worst sore throat (from being intubated), a drainage tube hanging from my shirt and a large incision in my neck sealed with Dermaglue. Took nearly 4 hours. Sheesh, and I had the other half removed 6 weeks ago so to go through this again, yeesh. I am now eating apple sauce and cool tea.

I am listening to Subterranean Masquerade as I type- that is really nice, and its opening does not give any idea where it is going. I will do further "study!" I am not sure why I was not interested because I am always open to new musics. Weird, me!

Most metal I fnd fairly boring, but Jinjer and Meshuggah really intrigue me- they are driving, complex and intense. I think it is those components, similar in some ways to Magma, that catch my attention. I mean, Meshuggah's song "Bleed" is mindbending in its complexity and relentless in its intensity. Jinjer's "Teacher Teacher" moves between Reggae and blast beats. Phenomenal songs.

The most "progress" in music right now is happening in the metal world. That's been my opinion for a long time, and in a conversation some years ago, Steven Wilson (Porcupine Tree) told me the same thing.

Not all metal. I fully agree that the vast majority of metal - even most old-school "prog-metal" - is as boring as. But the few acts putting out more adventurous or avant garde metal are pushing the envelope more than the majority of established "progressive" acts.

Track the "Everything Metal" thread, and watch for recommendations from Just Eric, Chalkpie, Battema, and several others.

Tatiana always calls herself a huge introvert, and it seems Eugene often acts as the band's spokesperson. In her interviews, Tati is always a bit slow to warm, but once she gets going, she has a lot to say.
