The Musical Box touring Selling England by the Pound

For the second time in three years, Quebec's Genesis tribute band The Musical Box is coming to my hometown of Victoria, BC! Woo-hoo! They are doing their genesis concert replication thing (which they do very well, imo), and this tour sees them performing Selling England by the Pound. I believe it's in celebration of the 50 year anniversary which took place in 2023.

I'll be attending Oct 22, 2024, the first of two nights playing at the Mary Winspear Centre in Sidney, a 30 minute drive from Victoria.

Any other ticket holders for this SEBTP tour?

In case any of you are not aware of either the band or the current tour, here's a link to their page with tour dates:

They are doing Foxtrot in some cities although their website does not point that out. Their website has never been very good. Regarding the Foxtrot dates, I look forward to seeing one of the shows, I love the pre Selling era. Having said that, to me one drawback to these shows is how short they will be. This Genesis tour saw the band playing 80 to 90 minute shows and that includes all the talking between songs. The Musical Box rarely breaks from "what Genesis did" so with tickets for them now over $100 that seems like a pretty short show. Hopefully they will add a couple of songs to the normal set list from that era.

But to the main point Don, agreed they are a must see for Genesis fans. They are superb! I have seen them at least 20 times and I will be seeing them again in San Francisco.

I'm sad that they never come to Texas.

Out of curiosity, did they ever bring the pyro back at the end of Supper's Ready? They had it way back, but like most groups stopped using it after the Great White tragedy.

I only found out about this tour a week ago, and was stoked to see that seats were available for the Sidney two Sidney shows. Sorry to hear the date you looked at is sold out.

I’m good until they do ATOTT again - I missed that one.

There is a reason they only did that once! It was their weakest "recreation"... musically it was still good but Denis was not a good Phil imo. That could have been a killer set had Martin still been in the band!

For those not aware and may be interested, TMB is doing a Genesis Live Tour starting later this month. Included are four shows in Ontario/Quebec in January.

Back to the upcoming SEBTP tour concert I'm attending Oct 22. I asked my 17 year old daughter to accompany me as a birthday gift for her (she'll be 18 on the 23rd). I've turned her on to a few Prog bands over the past two years or so, some of which she has really taken a liking to. It will be a special night for me to go to this concert and share the live Prog music experience with her!

That was one of my favorites actually, because my first exposure to 70's era Genesis was the Genesis In Concert film, that Night Flight aired several times back in the 80's (and which I VHS'd and watched many, many times).

There is a reason they only did that once! It was their weakest "recreation"... musically it was still good but Denis was not a good Phil imo. That could have been a killer set had Martin still been in the band!
See, I didn't think he did such a bad job, but then, I was focused on everything else, hearing all those great A Trick Of The Tail songs, the laser, back projections, etc. OK, so he didn't so much like Phil. So what?! But yeah, I guess that was a deal breaker for a lot of people. (shrug)

The thing is, they've done the SEBTP here so many times, it's ridiculous. I think I've seen that about 4 or 5 times. I've seen them do The Lamb twice (first time, in 2004, was better than the second one, because I was on the floor, whereas the second time, someone else bought the tickets, and we were up in the balcony, where the lighting effects weren't as effective...I specifically remember the lights during Waiting Room weren't as intense, and I was able to see Dennis across the stage, behind the backline, then walk forward to the front, at the start of Watcher Of The Skies...when I saw them the first time, all I saw was him sort of materializing out of the haze, as he walked forward). And I saw the A Trick Of The Tail show once.

I've never seen them do the Foxtrot show (which I'm curious to see, as I understand they do a few songs in that show that Genesis had dropped by the time of the Selling England By The Pound tour), and I've never seen the "black room" show, which I know is mostly just the Selling England show with a different backdrop, recreating the American leg of that tour, but I'd still like to see it, just as "something different".

Following up my OP, the concert was on Tuesday evening and Wow!, it was fantastic. Lovely theatre venue that seats around 400, making for an intimate atmosphere. Hearing Supper's Ready plus the selections performed from SEBTP live for the first time in my 62 years was an amazing experience. The band were spot on, the sound was perfect (at least to my ears), the Gabrielesque theatrics were a load of fun and added to the whole show. Not to mention the pre-song stories, which were, well, strange! As alluded, I never saw Genesis live but this recreation more than suffices.

The evening was made even more memorable in sharing it with my 17 year old daughter, who turned 18 the next day. She's gotten into some Prog over the last two years and really enjoyed the concert too. First live band concert setting for her.

I've commented before that I don't have many opportunities for live Prog, having lived on Vancouver Island my whole life.

All in all, a very special evening. If you have a chance to see The Musical Box, don't hesitate ~ Go!

I continue to ask why there aren't younger cover acts who are doing the same sort of thing.

An excellent show in Cleveland. The lead singer definitely has Gabriel's mannerisms and speech cadence down pat. I've now seen them do Selling England, The Lamb, Trick, and the Highlights show, or whatever it was called. I'll likely only attend moving forward if they do something different.

We have a tribute band called The Genesis Show coming to Cleveland in November. I assume they are younger, but don't know. Anybody seen them?

I don't feel that way at all. I was stoked to get to see that show.

My friends have seen them - they reproduce the 76-82 era. My friends saw them here in NJ doing the Duke Tour set and enjoyed it alot.

    edit: this was the show

they're good and I have seen all of their sets

zero bells and whistles (aside from lighting) and alot of enthusiasm and good vibes

they're the only way you will get to see a correct and direct Duke show, an abacab show etc.

I checked their website. If they're younger than TMB, it would only be marginally so, and despite playing a setlist from an actual tour, they really don't go in for the re-creation thing the way TMB does. Still, they're doing a show from the A Trick Of The Tail tour, and I will probably attend. Thanks for all the info, gentlemen.

I've seen TMB SEBTP show several times and even the original Genesis in 1973-74. So this new 2025 tour still seems to be the same recreation that may be running out of steam.
For something a little different, I would reccomend that you check out Martin Levac who does the Phil Collins solo shows but unfortunately are mostly played only in his native Quebec.

Like you I have seen the Selling England show many times and always enjoy it but I did just see the pumped up Foxtrot tour in San Francisco and it was both a welcome change and superbly performed.

Regarding Martin he is just fantastic.I was lucky enough to see him with the Musical Box several times and solo with his first few tours doing Genesis... The band was called Dance on a Volcano. They played the 1982 Abacab show with Suppers Ready. He really nails Phil both vocally and on the drum kit. I've never seen his Phil solo act but it is great no doubt.

Hey what a coincidence, one of those times that I saw TMB was at the Regency Ballroom in San Francisco (early 2017) and was the one with the best acoustics. I think this was the "white" show since there are two SEBTP stage versions. I'm sure probably you were there in the audience as well.

It is a great venue... They played the white show one night and the black show the other. I went to both shows. I never get tired of them... it's like taking a little trip back!
