    Oh man, RIP Herbie.

As a huge Sky fan, I always quit enjoyed this wonderful piece that Herbie composed. And he is having a blast playing both electric and acoustic bass:

2017 I was with Malcolm Mortimore who often played jazz with Herbie, in a pub in Wales. The background music was playing a lot of decades old popular UK hit songs that I didn't know, and five times in a row Malcolm said " Herbie played on that ". We had been with Herbie and others the previous night. I think that 15 minutes of unprogrammed unexpected listening I experienced is a good testament about Herbie's reputation as a player.
    I remember tomorrow

Aw man. RIP. Brilliant bassist who played on tons of records.
I always loved his story about double-tracking his bass part on David Essex' "Rock On" so he would get twice the session fee. If l recall he got a whopping 18 pounds for his work, instead of 9.
I go, and come back, like memories and symptoms.
I go, and come back, forever, evermore.
Part of me remains abandoned in a circle.
    Part of me moves on.

He did the same on Walk on the wild side, doubling an electric bass with an acoustic bass.

I'd forgotten about 'Rock On'. Best thing Essex ever did.

A favorite bass player. I thought he had played with Janis Joplin, but, just checked, that was Snooky Flowers.

Undeniably great song. Essex is also great in the film Stardust which is (or was) available in full on YouTube.

I happen to be listening to Lou Reed's "Transformer" as I write this and noticed there is quite a significant Tuba part on the song "Make Up" and "Goodnight Ladies". I never really noticed it that much before, but anyone know if that is Flowers playing it?

Yup, it's him, according to Wikipedia.

Herbie Flowers – bass guitar; double bass; tuba on "Perfect Day", "Goodnight Ladies" and "Make Up"

Sad news, he was a real colossus of the instrument. If he had only recorded than bassline for Rock On he would still be a legend, that is such an incredible song for it’s time, and his bass is fundamental. Of course we have so many more wonderful recordings to remember him by RIP.

Yeah, his bass part and the production is pretty much the whole song.

Very cool. I never really even paid attention to the Tuba on that album before. After listening with a set of headphones today I realized how much of a factor it is on those tracks.
