Pete Townshend Ronnie Lane Rough Mix 1977

Any love for this one? Recorded to satisfy Ronnie Lanes obligation to the record company after he signed on for and then bailed on a Small Faces reunion. Good tunes, all star cast. Critically acclaimed, sold poorly.

Not a masterpiece, but a good, solid, enjoyable album.

I love this album and played it to death 30 years ago. I should listen again. There is some highly poignant songs.

Great album. Have had the LP since '77.

Decent record, not great. I recall hearing Misunderstood on the radio back then, and I think I like Street In The City the most.

Interesting ... the only track I heard on the radio back then was "My Baby Gives It Away" (which I thought was a bit of a bid for airplay).

    I adore this album, actually.

In retrospect a good move for Ronnie Lane to pair up with Townshend. The Small Faces reunion (2 LPs worth) was a fiasco thanks to an out of control Steve Marriott who was lookin' corpsey by 1978.

There's an outtake or two on one of Pete's "Scoop" series.

Loved this album loose and fun work.

In my regard, this absolutely a masterpiece of an album. My favorite record from the Who/Pete Universe. Every track is killer. It relentlessly builds towards the last track which is explodes with energy. I listen to the CD quite often.

I really need to sit down and give this a listen. I was reading up on it after listening to All the Best Cowboys Have Chinese Eyes and forgetting what a good album that was. It seems that it was just Ronnie at the start, but when Pete entered the mix, Ronnie decided that he really liked working with him. And he liked some of the songs he was working on, too, and things just kind of snowballed from there. I'd definitely be up for hearing some more acoustic work from both guys.

In my opinion that's Pete's best solo album.

Kind of a toss-up between that and Empty Glass, but they're both excellent.

Empty Glass is brilliant. I find “…Chinese Eyes…” to be uneven.
Pete is one of the best songwriters.

Agreed, but I give a slight edge to Chinese Eyes because of "Slit Skirts," which is one of PT's most powerful lyrics ever (and a dynamite song too)

Heart To Hang Onto - Lane and Townshend - A stunningly powerful song. Love it.

This is why I like this place…we can agree to disagree, and also see the positives in most everything…I really enjoy most of Pete’s stuff, but just do not care for Slit Skirts. It seems so average within the realm of his other, amazing tracks.

So I really like that you, and I am sure many others, think so highly of it.

Just gave this album a listen last night, it's been a few years. Several very strong tracks.

I would love to! There are about thirty of you folks that I would love to hang with!
Plus, you could play along…my home has my huge drum set, keyboard rig, guitars, basses, and various ethnic and percussion toys…we could have a blast!

And I could then force y’all to listen to ATMOS mixes!

Oh, and the beer. Well, it would probably be Scotch and Whiskey, mostly.

I really like Rough Mix. I have a great copy on vinyl and a high def digital. This thread is making me revisit my other Townshend solo stuff. It's sad that nearly all of his solo work is OOP.

Pete and Ronnie Lane who is a little subdued -no doubt because of his recent MS diagnosis- promoting the LP on TV. For the record, I think "Who Came First" is Pete's best solo LP- but what do I know. The Watch on Youtube link works fine.
