New album from Jurgen Fritz (Triumvirat)

Looks like Jurgen Fritz is releasing a piano-based EP OF FIVE triumvirat songs. I’ve been seeing fans speculating that there is no physical release, only streaming, but haven’t seen anything official.

    From Jurgen’s website:

”For many, many years I have resisted touching the
    TRIUMVIRAT history.
Subconsciously maybe trying to avoid “damaging” the music & legacy that we created in the seventies of the last century …
There were a few times when the thought of doing something with it popped up –
but honestly, it never felt right.

And then you turn 70 …

2024 marks the 50th anniversary of TRIUMVIRAT making some noise internationally with the Album “ILLUSIONS ON A DOUBLE DIMPLE”.
Following that we had a good run for a few years with tours and albums like “SPARTACUS”, “OLD LOVES DIE HARD” and “POMPEJI” – which ended, when in the later seventies Disco and Punk turned the musical world around and put our “brilliant musicianship and epic musical indulgence” in its place – history.
And yes, we were in good company …

The last two albums at the end of the seventies, ”A LA CARTE” and “RUSSIAN ROULETTE”, were – with all due respect to the wonderful artists/musicians involved – a rather questionable try on my part to transform TRIUMVIRAT into a more song orientated Pop/Rock Band.
We know how that worked out …

So, why attack it now ?

I’ll admit – the forthcoming 50th Anniversary of the international “success” of TRIUMVIRA
had me thinking if there wasn’t something I could or should do, maybe … write a book ?

And then an old friend and mentor – Walter Puetz – approached me and asked, if I would consider to record an Album of TRIUMVIRAT Songs just playing piano – because obviously there are still a few people around the world, who enjoy and are interested in the music of TRIUMVIRAT.

    So an idea developed

for a song selection that is about to be released on the digital platforms (download and streaming) soon.

I took the lead vocal tracks from older TRIUMVIRAT Albums and created a new, piano based arrangement around those tunes. Concentrating on the melodic bits and pieces of those albums. Really – nothing to dance to … put on your headphones and listen.

It does not feature – humble as I am – the “partly brilliant, fast Organ or Piano sequences” of the older records.
( Into my early Seventies I couldn’t play those if I wanted to …)

    The Triumvirat Melodies

Part 1. And yes, there is more to come …

With the vocal performances of the exceptionally gifted TRIUMVIRAT singers of those years:
my unforgotten dear cousin Helmut Köllen – RIP – , Barry Palmer and David Hanselmann.

And whenever in the past 40 years I needed someone for vocal “help” on any production I called the amazingly talented Singer Elke Schlimbach.
So I did on this project.
Elke is Helmut Köllen’s Sister. So naturally – my cousin.
    We’re talking family here …

    It was a great,
    touching honor

and unbelievable fun to play piano to those amazing vocal tracks of these guys –
    after all these years.

    Enjoy.
    And as I said – hope, I haven’t done any damage …

The best to all you “TRIRATS” out there.
    Jürgen Fritz“

I'm speechless. After 45 years of us "TRIRATS" wishing to hear more,... it is what it is.

Dan, where did you find this letter from Jurgan? There are many more tracks on Youtube.

Jurgan, the time was 25-30 years ago, the late 90's. Your younger self could have headlined a prog fest or two.

There appear to be a total of five which is what is on this EP.

What a strange guy. So, on his website he verbally dismisses A La Carte & Russian Roulette, but also apparently omits Mediterranean Tales from his discography without even a mention. Why, because it wasn't sold internationally?

I don't subscribe to any of those streaming services so I guess I'm out of luck for a download right now.

Now if he would make a physical release, I might be interested.

A book would be interesting, IMHO. Maybe dig into the archives and see about what it would take to release a proper box set with any extra tracks you have in your archives? I AM excited that he is doing SOMETHING Triumvirat-related, admittedly these piano renditions are not the highest on my list of things he could've chosen though.

I'm with you guys - this isn't the most exciting thing he could release, however I am all in for a CD if he ever makes it that way.

You can add me to the list: if no physical (CD) version I'll pass...
Still, this was totally unexpected and It's good to know Jurgen is back behind his keys.

I don't think he stopped playing piano.

Probably not but he doesn't issued anything for a (very) long time.
And in his message he admits having lost some of his dexterity/virtuosity an no longer be able to play fast sequences.

He accompanied other people. But mostly artists that are not internationally known.

I know that, but he also stated many times that the Triumvirat era was behind him and he had no intentions to re-visit it.
That's the reason why I said "unexpected", though I would have preferred new compositions instead of Wakeman-esque piano solo versions of the old stuff.
    Still better than nothing...

Yes, that's perhaps a bit weird. What he did after Triumvirat was defenitly not anywhere near prog.

Actually there was a Triumvirat comeback project around 2002 named "The Website Story", but it never materialized.
According to the very few who had the chance to listening it in full it was not very "proggy".
The only remaining trace now is an old promo video on YT:

Just found this. Ambient music from Jurgan Fritz in 2007 that he shared with a co-worker who made digital imagery... but Fritz never released. The guy decided people should hear it since he lost contact with Fritz for years.

There is also this one full track, which I downloaded from that website all those years ago. As you say, not very proggy. But decent enough. Unfortunate that Juergen never released the album. I'm sure he didn't get the deal he wanted and pulled the whole project, but still, it would have been nice for fans to hear it.

This is pretty good actually. Reminds me of later-day Triumvirat "A La Carte / Pompeii" era. I think Jurgen could make stuff available and make a few bucks if he had the inclination.

You don't need to subscribe to Youtube in order to listen to the music that is hosted there.
