"The deal is reported to be worth around $400 million and also includes the rights to the band’s name and likenesses."
Does that mean Sony could go out and find four random guys off the street, call them Pink Floyd and have them tour?
What we feel we have to solve is why the dregs have not dissolved.

Not their "likeness" literally. The iconography around PF.
I do feel that nobody have noticed the importance of the "name and likeness" part of the deal. I think that's the main part of the deal even more than the recordings and the publishing which they let PF keep. Sure PF fans probably still buy physical media and Sony still owns a record label.
But after struggling to think where the material could be licensed for ( I mean in what commercial could you use "Welcome to the Machine"! ) , I realized that Pink Floyd's iconography is pretty much a part of 20th century history. The prism from DSOTM, the pig flying over Battersea, The Wall's... wall... I think those rights will be the most exploited in things that actually sell (not recordings!). DSOTM $2000 shirts from top designers, it occurs to me. VIP experiences...
Maybe I am wrong, but the fact that they let PF keep the publishing makes me thing that recordings and licensing is not the main thing...if not, what else?
Again maybe I am talking out my BBB... so I do apologize if stupid.
[Edit: After reading other posts in other forums, I think I am underestimating music licensing - using 'Walking on Sunshine' as an example, it looks like if only just one song is licensed successfully, it might be a great earner - that said, I still believe that when it comes to PF, the image is the greatest asset]
