    Proggy pet names

My wife and I are thinking about getting another dog. We'll probably wait until a little landscaping project is finished though, so we have some time to think of a name for the new member of the family. I was thinking it'd be kind of fun to give it a name with a prog or fusion reference. I had a friend in high school that named his dog Topaz, named after the instrumental song by Journey (before they went all pop with Steve Perry), but if you don't know the song it sounds kind of new agey. It's gotta be something short that rolls off the tongue. I can't be calling him at the dog park like "Come, Mahavishnu!"

If we pick a boy I was thinking of naming it Bruford, however we're not dead set on getting a male. Thought I'd solicit the hive for more ideas. Go!

I've considered naming my next cat "Tarkus." Hell of a lot better than "Topaz."

    Jaco!

I go, and come back, forever, evermore.

Or maybe Fish. That would get you some weird looks at the park. And l envision a possible wife veto with that one...
If l had a dog l would use that!

My dog's name is Celeste (italian prog).
What can this strange device be? When I touch it, it brings forth a sound (2112)

We had a cat "Topaz", but it was the Mrs.' idea, so not "Proggy".

We also had a Phaedra, but in that case I insisted that it was the TD Phaedra when she came up with it, not the old country song that I don't even know.

You mean "Some Velvet Morning"? That song is so loopy it practically is prog.

I looked up the lyrics. It does have a bit of a mid-career Sinfield feel to it.

Not exactly prog, but I named my Schnoodle dog "Zefram" after Zefram Cochrane from Star Trek. And since prog and science fiction have such close ties, I thought it might be appropriate here.

I have two female cats that I adopted when they were still kittens in January of 2022. One is named Remi which has no real significance as far as I'm aware. The name just popped into my head and I liked it. The other is named Toya who is named after Robert Fripp's wife Toyah. The spelling is different but I still got the idea after watching the Fripp and Toyah Sunday brunch videos.

Anyway, it's interesting seeing this thread pop up today because just yesterday I was thinking that if I got another cat and if it was a male cat I would name him Kitaro (maybe not quite prog but close enough). I had a friend a long time ago who gave his fish musical names. I don't remember how many he had but one was Fripp and the other was Eno.

Strange that when we were kids we had a cat that reminded us the the tarkus creature in the way he stood and that’s what we called him. My mom and dad were really confused about the name and my sister hated it. That was about 1973 when we had the cat so ELP’s Tarkus was one of our favorite albums at the time. Actually it still is come to think of it. I still think it’s a great name for a cat. And almost forgot to mention that my mom decided to refer to him always as Tarky which me and brother hated.

I thought I would not be able to add anything to this thread because I named my cats for famous Italians…Tulio, Ettore, etc.

Anyone got a poodle named Zappa? I don't have a pet I'm afraid.

I think we were punked by the OP who has never returned here. Maybe "McLaren" would be a good pet name.
Or "Mr. Ferocious", courtesy of Freddie Mercury.

I had a German Shepherd named Jaco. A wonderful dog too. He's missed 'round these parts.

My last three male dogs were named Ozzy (lab), Geddy (Nova Scotia Duck Tolling Retriever), and Gilmour (jack Russel Terrier).

I now own two female Australian shepherds that I named Crimson, and Tully.

We have a winner! I like all of the names. Actually Geddy is another name I'd thought of but we'll see... Still waiting for our landscaping project to be completed (hell, they still haven't even started yet!) before we go pet shopping.

We named our cat June after the Spock's Beard song.
