I don't like country music, but I don't mean to denigrate those who do. And for the people who like country music, denigrate means 'put down.'- Bob Newhart
I'm a few weeks into my "3-day split". It isn't working perfectly, though: An n-day split should be completed every week, so that you hit each muscle group, let it heal / recover for a week, then hit it again. But I'm only able to get to the gym 2x/week, so the delay for each muscle group is longer than a week - and that delay between hitting each muscle group is a bit too long.
I don't feel too guilty, though because I'm also doing a very intense indoor cycling workout 2x/week, and doing a 3-to-5 mile walk at least 1x/week. And with that program, I'm trying to do something meaningful 5x/week. (My watch says I've done more than 6,000 steps most days this last month - if that means anything.)
Last night's session at my coach's indoor training studio was a killer. It finished at 7:30, yet my heart rate only settled back to normal around 10:30pm. In this studio we put our own bikes onto "smart trainers", the coach keys in the index of performance (FTP) for each of us, and we all do the same workout regardless of individual capabilities. E.g. If my FTP (index thingie) is 250 and the person next to me has an FTP of 300, when we're both doing an interval at 105%, we're each suffering just as much - even though the person with the higher FTP might be putting out more power. (In this example I'd be doing 263 watts, but the other person would be doing 315.)
In this after-workout cool-down pic my coach was laughing at the number of sweatbands and towels I'd gone through in that 1-hour workout

Ack!
I have really bad 'flu, despite having had the 'flu shot.
I haven't been able to do any exercise for over a week, and the doc. says no exertion for another week.
I was chasing a fitness objective, increasing the intensity slightly every week. Now I'll have to back-step quite a way, and (re)start building up to that 240-watt FTP goal that I wanted to achieve by Christmas. Looks like I'll miss that timeframe
So I've been sitting on my butt, feeling sorry for myself, for 2 weeks straight. I can't describe how much that bugs me!
'Nuff wining LOL

That really sucks. I hate missing time for reasons like this. Vacation or something fun getting in the way of my routines is one thing, but illness or injury really bum me out. Hope you recover soon and can get back at it. With luck, things will come back fairly quickly.

I have severe wear on my hips. My right hip was operated 10 years ago so that one isn't bothering me but the last two year my left hip is giving me problems.
Some light pain with running and hiking but especially at night there is always this light nagging pain that keeps me awake for large parts of the night.
A couple of weeks ago I suddenly realized the pains were almost completely gone. Running is now completely pain free and at night the pains so much less than they were. So I asked myself: what is different? The only thing I could think off is that I did not drink any alcohol for the last couple of weeks. This was not a conscious choice; i just forgot to buy a new bottle of malt whiskey and a week later I thought Lets forget another week. Beer I usually only drink when its hot; which it wasn't. I just more or less 'accidently' drank any alcohol for 3 to 4 weeks.
When I searched the internet I found there is a relation between joint pains and alcohol. Of course you can find confirmation of anything these days; even that the earth is flat and that climate change is a hoax, but there were also more serious medical sites, that handle rheumatism f.e., that make the connection. Apparently alcohol can increase or maintain some inflammation in joints.
For me its now an easy choice between the short pleasure of malt whiskey or painless running and sleeping. I remain alcohol free for the coming period.
Long may your joints continue to be pain free!
I share that nighttime joint pain issue, though I do not drink very much, so I think it's age and wear and tear. I also have suffered from gout for 30+ years, which is mostly not an issue because the daily medication keeps the crystals from forming in the joints, but when it flares up it hurts so much. My right knee has ACL damage and can be so painful in the small hours.
I fear knee replacements are on the agenda at some point, both of my parents had each of their knees replaced and my Dad also had two hip operations, so my genetic disposition seems pre-determined.
Thanks. I visited the doc. today and was told to lay off exercise for the rest of this week. I'll get back to it soon enough.
But -
- Younger people can take a 2-week break and get back to things at almost the same level as they left off.
- When you reach a certain age we lose a lot in those 2 weeks, and need to work for a while to get back to the same level as we left off.
Not a problem - I'm just whining

When people ask why I still cycle, do gym, hike, climb mountains, go for midnight 5-mile walks, etc. at age 67:
