Here's mine. Made the first draft a week ago and finished it today. Been making a lot of recordings this month and mostly in the ambient/soundscape field as I am planning to do my next release focused on that. Soundtrack for a film even 'though there's no film. This "contest" or challenge really helped me to get on with it so big thanks for the idea.



Very simple and minimalistic and nothing really happens but it has a mood I think. Electric guitar with an open DADGAC# tuning swells through a stereo pan delay with flangers and choruses and extra delays at each end (all 80's Ibanez L & 10 series stompboxes not that it's important). 6-string bass with the same tuning through a Roland Chorus Echo tape delay. A two tracks of Behringer Monopoly synth with one oscillator on through that same tape delay. T-Bird bass. All guitars and basses through the same pedal board that has a cab simulator in the end. No other processing or onboard effects and it basically mixed itself while I played.

The cryptic title is a mixture of dates and the Ibanez FLL Flanger.

Okay folks, here's my submission! I thought I'd go ahead and get this uploaded and submitted before I get overtaken with the real world again.

Struggled with the title (doesn't everybody?). Few of my song titles mean anything....I just use the first thing that comes into my head. This one started as "October Challenge" which sounded weird, to "October Surprise" which was too political. "Season of Surprise" sounds a bit pretentious to me, but I figure it goes well with this type of music.

There's probably too much going on in this arrangement, but it's how I work and think, and I kind of can't help it. Anyway.....one call-out synth feature on this tune is the new Cherry Audio Polivoks. I think I have about 5 tracks of that one for pads, strings, polysynth brass, and the synth solo. Also threw in the Cherry Pro Soloist and Lowdown.

Hope ya'll enjoy it! Would love to get your thoughts on the mix, arrangement, etc. I opted for YouTube since I put stuff up there pretty often, but this is also up on Bandcamp for anybody into that platform:

I was busy yesterday, so I didn't have a chance to reply here.

I like it too very much. What a lovely track, great playing. I'm not saying it needs anything else ('cause it doesn't) but I could hear Richard Sinclair singing or scatting on top of it.

Oh wow, that's awesome Bill! Love the overall vibe and the melodic bass line. I hope this analogy isn't a misfire, it reminds me of some of the great early Windham Hill stuff, especially things where Manring makes an appearance.

Cool piece, Bill! I love the fretless bass! I'm with John on the Windham Hill vibe there....and that's a good thing from where I'm sitting! I can totally imagine a full-length album of this type of material! And a very balanced mix to my ears, too!

Thank you all for your wonderful comments. I can absolutely hear Richard Sinclair scatting over this song. Now I want to call him and see if he'll do it!

It's interesting that people hear Windham Hill stuff. I don't doubt it for an instant, but I don't really listen to that stuff. I do love Manring's playing, but I don't have much in my collection with him on it. This tune is a bit of an outlier for me, which is probably why I never really did much with the idea until now. I'm glad it's time finally came and that folks are enjoying it.

I just gave the three other pieces than have been posted a first spin. I'm going to shift to my studio speakers and listen a bit more before I comment, but in short, all three are incredibly professional and intriguing. I'm looking forward to exploring further and hope we get more submissions.

"We were in the basement of the old abandoned home when to our horror, a zombie disco broke out..."



The bits:

The starting 7/8 voice riff already existed from a few months ago, a random noodle I'd captured with the Emulator II-V synth. Everything else happened this month, very much "Exquisite Corpse" style to be honest. Wasn't really a plan per se, more a matter of "hmmm, maybe THIS can happen next or on top of that." Just about everything is first take with as little "fixing" as humanly possible. Arguably analogous to my path through life if we're being honest here

The big exception is the drums...I stressed on those for about a week, trying to do something appropriately complex and "proggy" before I decided to just screw it and go with what feels right. So it ended up with a very late 80's "Full Moon Entertainment" B-movie soundtrack kind of vibe. I'm ok with that

It's all soft synths due to the time constraints; the more synth-y stuff is probably 70% Cherry Audio and 30% Arturia. The more cinematic stuff is predominantly Spitfire stuff with a bit of Omnisphere. Did a very hasty mastering job; it ended up a bit louder than I was expecting but it's not brickwalled, I swear.

Oh, I drove myself nuts on the art as well; finally this morning I threw in the towel for my loftier aspirations, broke out the charcoals and pastels and banged this out while the morning coffee was brewing. Took a pic with my phone, then annoyed myself trying to remember how to blur edges in Gimp for the final digital version

And that's that! I hope it sits well alongside all the awesome stuff you folks have dropped thus far!

Yay, and thanks I mixed via headphones so I'm pretty sure it'll sound spiffiest that way, but I did check it against speakers, etc..

FYI - looks like we have all the submissions that are coming, so I'm working on a composite post with all the links that I'll post to the main board later This was fun!! I hope we are all game to do it again...maybe next Halloween as well, but maybe I'll "start" things earlier so a few more folks are comfortable joining in.
