I figured I would set up a thread dedicated to our creative challenge. Here we can post our entries when ready.

Oh sweet! I will give this a proper listen a little later

Mine is definitely going to take a bit more time
If you're actually reading this then chances are you already have my last album but if NOT and you're curious:

More time would have been detrimental to my crazy thing. I figured I had better stop while I was somewhat ahead.

10/28 may be too early for me, but I should have something by 10/30. I'll need to look into somewhere to post the file. I don't use any streaming services or Soundcloud, but I guess I could start an account on the latter. Any other suggestions?

I'm posting mine directly to YouTube, since it's free and relatively easy to do. Soundcloud is fairly easy to use if memory serves.

I'm on BandCamp. I have four albums there under two different bands. I didn't really feel it was worth it to start another page just for this and I don't want to add this to one of the band pages, which is why I was looking for an alternative.

    I'll figure something out.

I did actually finish tracking my song today. I'm ready to fix up a couple of small sections and then I need to move on to mixing. Hopefully my friend can do it because I really suck at mixing. [emoji16]

Hope you guys don't mind, I added some vocals to mine... I figure I've got a few days left and I can't stop fiddling with the damn thing. And thanks, MOZO!!! I didn't think anyone ever came to these threads.
I am always in these threads - for me, I try to use it as motivation.

I write ALL the time, but I suck at even the basics of keeping it together as a recording engineer. When I was in our band, our guitarist was that guy - I was always there for mixing, mastering, decisions - just the two of us - but not pushing the faders....

So I wrote something, being inspired by the OG thread - perhaps I will get it together enuff with my Tascam 16 to demo.

Looking forward to the contributions of those who make it across the line!

So, for all my bitching and whining (), my track is done. I finished recording it yesterday and my buddy helped me mix it today, though I actually did most of the mixing... he just has way better tools than I do, and got me pointed at some things that quickly got me where I wanted to go. The song features double-tracked acoustic guitars and fretless bass. I've had parts of this in mind for a while, but never really "finished" it, so much of the guitar composition happened this month as well as all the bass. For the bass, I wanted the part to serve as both a traditional bass part, and as something of a melodic line that operates separately from the guitars.

So, here it is... "Little Cat," dedicated not to my first cat, but rather to my first little cat, Felix, who was born on our kitchen floor about an hour after we rescued his mom (our first big cat) as a stray on a cold October night right before Halloween in 1999... literally almost 25 ago years to the day. He was quite a character. If you detect a bit of poignancy in the song, it's because I still miss him terribly, but I also fondly remember his singular personality and indomitable spirit.

    I hope you all enjoy.

Sputnik (Bill) This is fantastic! Nice bass and an all-around uplifting sort of tune. Great Guitar work, clear as a bell mix... Some serious talent.

Wish I could find a DAW guy bass player to toss some bass onto my stuff... (Hint Hint)

    I'm right here!

Seriously, I'd love to collaborate with things like this. I originally thought this challenged would be a collaboration, not a solo piece. That got my anxiety level up.

I much prefer to work in collaboration with others and would be thrilled to contribute parts to the work of others. Hit me up when you find yourself in need!

I would love to send you some weird stuff to add bass to. Pretty unconventional, no real rules. I can return the favor if you need some weird stuff on any of your works.
Can this piece be saved with some Bass? It sounds very Thin in spots... let me know what you think!

i think this could definitely benefit from some bass. I don't think it needs to be a super complex part, but I think having something to anchor the root of what's going on and maybe provide a consistent pulse would be of great benefit.

I could work on it. It would really be helpful to have a version with just the drums and the chordal underpinning, possibly with a click track - unless you can provide me with the exact tempo. I could then develop some parts and then bring in the full mix to see if it meshes with the overlays. Message me here and we can talk further.

I like it too very much. What a lovely track, great playing. I'm not saying it needs anything else ('cause it doesn't) but I could hear Richard Sinclair singing or scatting on top of it.

Oh wow, that's awesome Bill! Love the overall vibe and the melodic bass line. I hope this analogy isn't a misfire, it reminds me of some of the great early Windham Hill stuff, especially things where Manring makes an appearance.

Your cat's spirit will be very, very, very pleased for sure

Excited to hear what else surfaces this week from everyone! Hoping to have mine ready late tomorrow or early Monday...

Cool piece, Bill! I love the fretless bass! I'm with John on the Windham Hill vibe there....and that's a good thing from where I'm sitting! I can totally imagine a full-length album of this type of material! And a very balanced mix to my ears, too!

Okay folks, here's my submission! I thought I'd go ahead and get this uploaded and submitted before I get overtaken with the real world again.

Struggled with the title (doesn't everybody?). Few of my song titles mean anything....I just use the first thing that comes into my head. This one started as "October Challenge" which sounded weird, to "October Surprise" which was too political. "Season of Surprise" sounds a bit pretentious to me, but I figure it goes well with this type of music.

There's probably too much going on in this arrangement, but it's how I work and think, and I kind of can't help it. Anyway.....one call-out synth feature on this tune is the new Cherry Audio Polivoks. I think I have about 5 tracks of that one for pads, strings, polysynth brass, and the synth solo. Also threw in the Cherry Pro Soloist and Lowdown.

Hope ya'll enjoy it! Would love to get your thoughts on the mix, arrangement, etc. I opted for YouTube since I put stuff up there pretty often, but this is also up on Bandcamp for anybody into that platform:

Wow, wow, and a bit more wow for good measure...love the hell out of that, Pat! I am endlessly blown away by your compositional chops and arranging skills. Just great all around. Thanks for sharing!

Happy to see you throw some light on the new Cherry Audio Atomika / Polivoks too! I'm loving it as well and it definitely appears in my tune...although I mainly wanted to showcase it's angry, gnarly, "this synth WILL electrocute you" filter-on-the-threshold-of-meltdown nature

Thanks man! I really appreciate that!

Man, I've spent all of about 10 minutes with the Atomika (if I'm being generous), and I'm a real preset junkie, so the few tracks here are mostly out-of-the-box sounds. The intro pad is the "Avant-garde" preset, for anybody interested. I can't wait to hear you make this thing scream and make my eardrums bleed! I know it's got that capability!

Pat, That was really something. Pure class! And it really did give me an autumn feeling. Very professional. Great keyboarding. Big talent from you and Sputnik.

Here's mine. Made the first draft a week ago and finished it today. Been making a lot of recordings this month and mostly in the ambient/soundscape field as I am planning to do my next release focused on that. Soundtrack for a film even 'though there's no film. This "contest" or challenge really helped me to get on with it so big thanks for the idea.

Very simple and minimalistic and nothing really happens but it has a mood I think. Electric guitar with an open DADGAC# tuning swells through a stereo pan delay with flangers and choruses and extra delays at each end (all 80's Ibanez L & 10 series stompboxes not that it's important). 6-string slide bass with the same tuning through a Roland Chorus Echo tape delay. A two tracks of Behringer Monopoly synth with one oscillator on through that same tape delay. T-Bird bass. All guitars and basses through the same pedal board that has a cab simulator in the end. No other processing or onboard effects and it basically mixed itself while I played.

The cryptic title is a mixture of dates and the Ibanez FLL Flanger.
    20241026_200204.jpg

EDIT: I also put it on my youtube channel
