Thread: Will Bands Decide Touring Is Too Dangerous?

  1. #26
I can barely afford tickets for the acts I do like, never mind buying tickets for acts I don't like so that I can disrupt their concerts.

I saw Genesis at SPAC IN 1980 and some cretin threw a M 80 off of the balcony and it blew up above the stage during the middle of a song (Deep in the Motherlode?). . It is an amphitheater and it was way louder than the band. Tony Banks looked particularly shaken. They somehow managed to not stop playing.

Clearly not what the OP had in mind, but this report from Papangu is pretty horrible...

We were robbed at gunpoint last night, right after our tour closure concert in Rio de Janeiro.
They stole a rental car containing musical instruments, gear, all of our merch (incl. LPs and CDs), cellphones, luggage, and other personal items. It is an immense financial hit.

Wow. That sucks. No, l certainly didn't think of that, but it's certainly an aspect of "dangerous touring".
I go, and come back, like memories and symptoms.
I go, and come back, forever, evermore.
Part of me remains abandoned in a circle.
    Part of me moves on.

That's what the vast majority of touring musicians deal with. It's not all glamorous with a couple of tour buses, and/or a private plane. And several semi trucks carrying all the gear. Regular musicians also have to deal with vehicle breakdowns. Venue owners stiffing them, and saying "sue me if you want your money." Highway accidents damaging their vehicles and/or equipment. Name anything that can happen to anyone else, it can happen to normal touring musicians.

I would disagree and say you've basically covered it properly. i had the same thought that back in the day seemed worse with so many stories of musicans having beer bottles and random shit thrown at them on stage with worrying frequency. I suppose today the concept of terror attacks are much more heightened, but overall, its always been a hard job to be a touring musician (unless you were super rich/famous I suppose) and danger has always been part of the game.
Please don't ask questions, just use google.

Never let good music get in the way of making a profit.

Yeah, I don't think the "vast majority" of musicians - or of any other demographic group - have been victims of armed robbery.

Nor have the vast majority of society been involved in a motor vehicle accident. The chances of anybody being robbed are the same chances anybody will be involved in a car crash. What the vast majority of touring musicians deal with the shit that happens to everybody else.
