Yeah, me too, what I call the vanilla prog, not necessarily a bad taste, but not an interesting one and it get stale pretty rapidly : All the Neal Morse related bands, TFK, Vanillion , the dozens PT/SW "clones", etc.

Apocalypses seem to be popular but definitely overplayed… I look for abstract offerings with economical words that let the listener put together his/her own story. Inspiring the imagination. It can be done without lyrics as well.

I only search out this specific part. If it's in either 8/8 or 10/8 time signature then it's an auto skip for me.

Agreed, I rarely listen to it these days but I would be tempted make an edited version of it for next time I do!

I know it doesn't make sense, but I like those Genesis bits when played by other bands better than I like them by Genesis! Two that come to mind are IQ and Ad Infinitum. I never clicked with Genesis; although there were a few songs I liked I never wanted to own the albums when I heard them in full. I even like when other singers blatantly copy Gabriel's voice, like with Mangala Vallis or The Watch, better than I like Gabriel himself!

While I do like modern bands that stretch and expand the boundaries of prog into new territory, I also like those that harken back to classic 70's styles with vintage analog keyboard sounds and the like. It's just a comfort zone for me, I guess.

If the album cover looks AI generated, that's a turnoff for sure. I see this cover on Prog Archives for example, and I really can't tell if it's AI generated or just digital art that's way too shiny. That's generally a style I dislike too, since a hand-painted version of the same image would look much less cheesy.

Also one of the PA reviewers thinks that the female voice on the album could be AI as well, since no women are credited with singing. That would be a turnoff if true.

I personally love it when a contemporary prog band/artist does an homage to the Apocalypse in 9/8 section. I even included something like that in one of my songs. xD

Indeed, it's repetitive and boring.

But if you're looking for a more repetitive and boring version of Apocalypse just check MARILLION's "Grendel": it's a copy of Apocalypse 9/8 but played in .... 8/8 ! Maybe technically they (Mick Pointer) weren't able to play in 9/8 ?

Agree 100% with the weak vocalist thing. I ran out of patience with that some time ago.

I am surprised to hear a lot of people dissing on the original Apocalypse in 9/8 though. A classic of building tension and then release in my book. But yes, I don't need to hear other bands deliberately aping it.
