It’s dusk inside an empty Hollywood Bowl as David Gilmour peers out from the stage and delivers his song “Dark and Velvet Nights” to no one in particular. A strutting psych-blues jam with visions of “great cities that toppled and drowned,” it’s a highlight from the Pink Floyd veteran’s strong new solo album, “Luck and Strange” — and one of the latter-day cuts his fans will politely nod their heads to a few hours from now between beloved oldies such as “Wish You Were Here” and “Comfortably Numb.”

At 78, Gilmour has been at this long enough to know what his audience wants, which is as much of Pink Floyd’s ’70s-era songbook as he’s willing to play. Not that he especially cares: “When I’m working, I don’t consider an audience member’s views because that’s the death of art, if you ask me,” he says after sound check at the Bowl before the second of three gigs there last week. “I’m sorry if it’s arrogant to call what I do art, but I’ll stick with it.” For him, performing his music is its own reward — one reason he sings at close to full power, his voice brawny yet lithe, as his live band test-runs a few tunes behind him.

Pleasant interview, low on revelations but still nice.

Yeah, I was lucky enough to see him at MSG Tuesday and Wednesday nights. I thought it was the best tour he’s done. It seemed to be less about fan service and more about musical integrity than past shows (which have always been great, don’t get me wrong), and it was sublime. A friend who saw a show in LA said it was ironic how because of this, it was the most like an early Floyd show.
It also made me get into the new album a lot more, and I’ve been spinning it a lot since.
Really loved it and so glad I got to go.

He seems to have forgotten about “Fat Old Sun,” which was a definite highlight and got one of the loudest ovations.

A friend who saw a show in LA said it was ironic how because of this, it was the most like an early Floyd show.

I was thinking how Gilmour sounds more like Floyd than Floyd would these days. That was my point of comparison.

DG has stated that he wants to record very soon with this band. If he does, I’d guess another very limited tour will follow. What “soon” actually means is up for debate, but if he wants another album a 9 year wait like between the last two won’t cut it.

I hear (or read, really) but they filmed one of the Italian shows. I hope it’s a later one after they added ”Slings,” though they probably would film multiple shows. It is too bad, however, because he never played “A Single Spark” at those shows.

Gilmour did a perfectly good job on Jimmy Gallon’s show, but there were a couple of cringeworthy moments. Nothing really Dave’s fault. Fallon claiming to be into Syd was a bit questionable, but who knows. Fallon reminded me of Matt Foley reminding Paul McCartney about when he was in The Beatles or whatever. But definitely nice to see and hear Dave!

At least Gilmour had it out as an album when he was on tour. Gabriel's was initially spread all over YouTube in different mixes that came out every 'full moon'. But I think artists have a right to play material from their new albums. It's not entirely nostalgia touring then, even if that's what a fair amount of the audience wants.

Gilmour has said he plans to do a follow-up.

The impressive part of Gabriel's show was that even if you hadn't heard any of the new songs, or only caught some of the full moon releases, it was still powerful and did not feel off for being loaded with the new material. It was a fantastic show no matter how much of the new material you'd heard. At least based on the sample size of the group I was with where about half the people hadn't heard any of it and still loved the show.
