Tull Under wraps pleasant snare remixes out now

Wow. The album sounds great now. Propper drums with early 80s sound, more bass and guitar. The songs sound miles better and the album has gone from mediocre to one of my fave Tull albums. He still has to finish 5 songs but a couple more should come any hour or day

Not being much of a Tull fan I'd never heard anything from Under Wraps. I was just comparing this remix to the original. Wow....what were they thinking with that awful snare sound? Was it on the entire album?

I always though Under Wraps was an album with good song made to sound ugly with hirrible drum ans synth sounds.

The drums Do sound better but it is still a long way from exiting ' lively' drumming..

Yeah, the entire original album has that synthetic broken snare sound. I have always liked UW, and over time I've gotten used to the intrusive snare. For me, the album sounds a little "wrong," if objectively much better, without it.

Hopefully Ian A will hear this remix and attempt a bona fide live drum remix as he has threatened to do for about three decades.

It's still a long way from the glorious soundscapes we had in the 70s.

If only the same percussion approach that Walk Into Light employed had been used with Under Wraps, I think the album would have had a better reputation over the years, since it has a bunch of good songs on it, especially if the extra tracks on the CD version are considered.

The drums on the original were better in some songs than others so these new versions have improved certain songs more.
The album also lacked bass but it sounds great now.
Martins guitar and Ian’s voice is standing out more now too.
I like Vettese on keys. Similar talent to Jobson
The album has doubled in rating and the songs are addictive but previously unlistenable lol
I’ll comment on the songs done so far.

Lap of luxury-what was a horrible song has become pretty good tune. I like martins guitar
Under wraps one- similar to above. Fun track
    European legacy-good track sounding better
Later that same evening-awesome track that I never bothered with before thanks to new sound
    Saboteur-similar to European legacy
Radio free Moscow-love this one even more now
    Astronomy-really fun one. Sounds great
    Tundra-similar to European legacy
Nobody’s car-fun track. Bit like Astronomy
Heat-a lot better now and a pretty busy one. Much improved

    In waiting are:
    Under wraps two
    Paparazzi
    Apogee
    General crossing
    Automotive Engineering
These 5 will be some of the best

I like lots of their catalog but was not familiar with the album. I listened to the original for a few moments…ugh, what a terrible snare sound. Kinda like an early drum machine.

The remix is a far better sound. As a drummer, I know how important snare sounds are. Of course, I have a number of snare drums and tune them/treat them differently, and sometimes use samples, but I always go for something tasteful. The original Tull sound was quite bad.

Luxury, wraps 1 and heat had the worst of the original drums. The others were mainly ok once you eq the high frequencies out lol. But with the real drums it doesn’t sound robotic anymore. Just pretend it’s a young Doane Perry

TBH, if more bearable under this new form, it won't change much. It's not only the drum sound the problem, but the drum playing in general.
Even with this improvement it will remain at the very bottom of Tull albums lists.
Ettese's KB are as much a problem, IMHO.
Because even if the drumming was perfect, the songs are anything but good, because they are trying to sound 80's.

Yup, even Too Old To (or WC) has got still quite a margin on that early 80's trilogy (A, TB&TB and UW)
my music collection increased tenfolds when I switched from drug-addicts to complete nutcases.

Huge fan of the album and I don't like this at all. Under Wraps isn't meant to sound 'warmer.' The coldness and mechanical atmosphere is an essential part of the record and its conception. It was the last truly progressive record Tull ever made. Everything afterwards was regressive 'classic rock.' Doesn't mean I don't like the later music - I do. But making Under Wraps more sonnically consistent with other albums, or making it sound more like classic Tull, was never the creative intent. If something like this were to become an official release, or replace the original, it's kind of a sell out.

Isn’t this where we throw Phil Collins under the bus for ruining everything? In this case it is the embracing of early drum machines which was in reality a very common trend in the 80s. Those sounds influenced to a degree where the Tull record ended up.

And yes, it is not just the timbre of drums that matters, but also the way they are played (or programmed).

These changes are often controversial. Recall the remix of Parsons’ “Tale of Mystery and Imagination) when the 70’s drums were replaced with a more modern, heavily reverbed sound. (I found the first few listens a bit jarring but then fully embraced the remix because it was still a real snare drum. I just think that with real snares and sampled snares, the cricket sounds that masqueraded as snare drums are just not very interesting.)

If they still have the multitracks, I'd be interested to just hear a remix with the volume of the percussion reduced.
