They're worth a listen.

They are worth a listen! I haven't been this excited by a band in years. Honest.

I came here to post a song by Arch Enemy with Alissa White-Gluz singing- she has a more standard metal vocal style when she is singing clean, and her growl is a bit higher pitched than Tatiana's. But you guys beat me. I've found a few more female vocalists who did this, but I think the best growl comes Tatiana. Arch Enemy sort of hammers you into submission- mainly by the blast beat drumming, which is pretty impressive. But the musicians in Jinjer are far more technically adept and more to my liking- mixing prog and jazz and metal, and with Vlad's drumming the secret sauce, I think.

Duncan, I rode RAGBRAI last year, it's 50th. It was a disaster for me. The crowds were immense, at points making it impossible to walk through a town, or find a toilet or even drinking water. They have basically banned all concessions between towns, so when you have a 22-mile stretch in 95 degree heat and no water, what can you do? We had temps near 100 degrees each day, high humidity, and on the third day I passed out from heat exhaustion (I have a thyroid problem-its enlarged- with low free T4, so I cannot dissipate heat well). State troopers put me in their SUV to cool down. After 3 days and around 225 miles I left the ride. ANd decided I was done with RAGBRAI- it has become too corporate. And I was with Pork Belly Ventures, a group so large we were never near anything. My TX ride will have 50 people, not 25,000.

Sad to hear about your RABBRAI experience! Still you've ridden so many of them now, you should be in their hall of fame

After my Mt.Rainier climb last year I was very INactive, , and am just now rebuilding strength and fitness. I've registered for an April 10km kayak race (I won it last year, so the challenge is on and I'm training for it) - but need to set some cycling goals.

But if I were to vote for the greatest metal of all time, I would go with something that preceded metal by some years, the MC5 Live record. Seeing this band live, in 1969, was nothing you had ever seen. More bands than will ever admit owe a lot to the 5. (and Wayne Kramer just died, sad to say).

Really? I like all those early Belladonna albums the most. That first album is good. It's their Kill 'Em All. Raw Anthrax.

Edit:To add I'm listening to Spreading The Disease. I dig Joey's voice. He has a melodic, classic rock voice. But it works in Anthrax.

I played with Vernon once. It was cool.

I mentioned this a few weeks ago, but never told the story. This came up in a private chat with someone here today who was listening to music with Vernon Reid on it. So, here comes the story.

I was part of the drum faculty at the National Guitar Workshop. In the summer of 2008 I was teaching during the Rock Summit. Vernon was one of the guest artists that week. Everyone thought that he was going to use pre-recorded tracks to play along during his clinic. I finished teaching the day he was there at 4:00 p.m. and was walking my class over to the auditorium see his clinic. The Artistic Director ran over to me and said, "Rick! You're playing with Vernon. Go backstage right now." So, I went back and we chatted briefly about what we were going to play. Vernon went out and started his clinic and a few minutes later called me and the bass player (same situation for him) out and we were up there jamming. It was a good time. We all went out to dinner after and I chatted with him a little bit about his work with Ronald Shannon Jackson and Percy Howard. He was happy to talk about the lesser known projects.

To be honest I always had mixed feelings about Oliva’s voice. I remember the first time I heard Savatage was when I saw the video for “Gutter Ballet” on MTV’s headbangers ball. My buddy and I were watching it together and we both thought the music on that track was stunning, but we were both lukewarm on the vocals. I started buying Savatage albums and got used to his voice, but when Zak Stevens came on board I thought it was a significant improvement. The albums with both Zak and Oliva singing together are my favorites as I think their voices compliment each other well. Of course, Chris Oliva is one of the more underrated guitarists of his era and it was a tragedy when we lost him. Anyway……I enjoy all eras the Taj so it’s all good.

I'm pretty picky with prog metal, but I've been digging into this album lately. Pretty solid stuff here with a mash up of heavy, melodic, angry, soft...so far it's hittin' the right notes with me. Definitely going to be keeping an eye on this band...
