I dunno if it's really "Metal," but I have been listening to Ckraft--Epic Discordant Vision. Armenian Jazz Metal with sax and accordion.....???

Nice. Always welcome a new one by these guys.

This kicks all sorts of ass! These guys have gone full prog with hints of Tangerine Dream (yes, actually TD on this) and some Gilmour/Floyd vibe. The other track is released in October. Most prog nerds will complain about the growls but love everything else.

    It's out:

Seems like the physical media sold out immediately.

Just listening to this now, so far I'm quite intrigued.

Yeah, listening to this right now myself and enjoying it. Thanks for the tip-off Frankie!
If you're actually reading this then chances are you already have my last album but if NOT and you're curious:

I listened to the track this morning and I enjoyed it - but still, while I am certainly a below average "prog nerd" compared to PE membership stats ;-), these ears still have trouble with cookie munster vox.

I guess I just like the traditional doom metal vox style better....

I don't have an issue with the growls at all, although sometimes I think they work better than other times. This is one case where I could honestly go either way: they don't feel integral to the music but I'm perfectly fine with them being there. I wouldn't mind an instrumental mix of this album at some point though!

This has also reminded me that I haven't listened to Timewave Zero in a while, so that's up next after the Aphex Twin reissue finishes playing.

    Does this count as metal?

It's almost as metal as Babymetal, but less fun. Is it new from DT?

I think these dudes are great. There's a silliness sort of Primus-like that may be a turn off to some, but the grooves and riffage are undeniable

Here's a couple more. If the silliness is a distraction, this band is not for you...

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hajduk?wprov=sfti1#

“Hajduk” is the Hungarian spelling, in Romanian it’s “haiduk”, the word exists in various forms in Balkan countries. Broadly it means an outlaw or brigand. See also Didier Malherbe’s Hadouk Trio, and Romanian folk band Taraf de Haidouks. The name of the Edward Abbey character is derived from this source.

I had no idea my life was incomplete without an answer to the question "what if Portishead made a black metal album?" But here we are, here it is, and my word is it awesome

This album is weird, dark, equal turns atmospheric and heavy as hell, and absolutely going to be in my favorite platters of 2024.

PS: FWIW while I am loving their new album I still regard their last island Mestarin Kynsi to be a desert island disc, and probably where I'd send newbies for a start.

Perhaps you nailed why I was very underwhelmed with this album.

Only one listen of course, but definitely at the bottom of the pile for me atm.

I know it's a bit OT but I find it interesting that someone on here knows about the late Edward Abbey. I never read his stuff but an old friend liked him and mentioned him back in the 90s. Then I came across his name again in the Neil Peart book I read (Ghost Rider). Neil seemed to be a pretty big fan of his (and also Jack London). I suppose the Monkey Wrench Gang and Desert Solitaire are his two most famous (and probably best places to start?).

I believe I started with The Monkey Wrench Gang, and eventually read all the rest, fiction and non-fiction. I don't remember how I learned about The Monkey Wrench Gang. Such a long time ago. Maybe I should revisit some of Abbey's books. Perhaps the books are more relevant to those who have lived their lives in the West or Southwest of this big country. Certainly seemed like books I needed to read, in my younger years.
