Thanks very much for all the suggestions. That's a good amount to discover and process.

Brandnew and totally brilliant:
Tugs
Unreal City (from Zuffantis new lable like Oxhuitza)
Il Giardino Onirico
Ornithos (offshot from Il Bacio della medusa), Rome Pro(g)ject, Il castello di atlante, Gan Eden
Another one that was not mentioned and is quite brilliant is I Treni All'Alba (prog led by dual acoustic guitars, what else can you ask for?):
Akt was mentioned, but no video clip posted. Worth investigating:
And finally, for people inclined towards more adventurous stuff, Electric Leak with one brilliant album:
More songs streamed on their MySpace page!

One more: Barock Project (not to be confused with Baroque and Barrock, both from Italy, but already - Baroque - mentioned on the first page):
RE: Barock Project. Check out their last album, Coffee in Neukölln. It’s pop-prog of surprisingly high quality:

MIKE (a.k.a. "Progbear")
"You can take the war out of the soldier, but you can't raise that soldier from the dead."
--Shona Laing
N.P.:“Looking for Someone”-Genesis/Trespass
There are tons of further really brilliant bands:
Periferia del mondo
L'Estate di San Martino
INGRANAGGI DELLA VALLE
IL CERCHIO D'ORO
Goad
StereoKimono
Garden Wall
Minstrel
Labirinto Di Specchi
Conqueror
The Watch
Euthymia
NichelOdeon
La Maschere di Clara
Breznev Fun Club
Altare Tothemico
are only those which come to mind at this moment, there are many many more
Seconded, and their album is a 'name-your-price' at their Bandcamp: http://lacoscienzadizeno.bandcamp.com/.
I agree that La Torre dell' Alchimista is probably the finest "retro-symph" act I heard from (fairly) recent Italy, and especially their wonderful second album, Neo from 2007.
Everything Yugen does is great, IMHO - if impossibly dense and demanding.
SKE's 1000 Autunni is arguably my single fave recent Italian disc, with Chance:Risiko's album following right behind and Areknames' Love Hate Round Trip thereon.
Both Calomito releases are superb, Slivovitz are more squarely "chamber-jazz", but will appeal to Calomito buffs. Pandora are good, as are the reformed Syndone and Mad Crayon.
And:
"Improvisation is not an excuse for musical laziness" - Fred Frith
"[...] things that we never dreamed of doing in Crimson or in any band that I've been in," - Tony Levin speaking of SGM
1 thing I could recommend, is years ago I accidentally ended up having some 70's Italian Prog on while having the cartoon "Top Cat" on without the sound and some unusual observation, the music and tempo of the animation sync-ed up.
Specifically, I think it may have been Banco and Il Balletto Di Bronzo.
^ Classic Italian proggers loved Top Cat!
LOL
Just wanted to endorse EGONON as well. Such a good album. Some others :
LA COSCIENA DI ZENO
LABIRINTO DI SPECCHI
ALTARE THOTEMICO
"The wind is slowly tearing her apart"
Sad Rain
Anekdoten
And if there were a god, I think it very unlikely that he would have such an uneasy vanity as to be offended by those who doubt His existence - Russell
Why is it whenever someone mentions an artist that was clearly progressive (yet not the Symph weenie definition of Prog) do certain people feel compelled to snort "thats not Prog" like a whiny 5th grader?
Wow! Given the appreciation found here on SKE, Yugen and La Coscienza di Zeno, you might find interesting our brand new effort:
