I was today years old when I learned that Jakko was in the Kinks in the '90s--for one week.

No, but he'd worked with Sinfield on unrelated songwriting projects.
Thanks, Anil will have the straight dope!

I guess Jakko told Anil the same story as he did to me in 2007, but if you're interested, here's a piece of that interview:

In 2002 the 21st Century Schizoid band was formed by ex-King Crimson member Mel Collins, Peter Giles, Ian Wallace and Ian McDonald and yourself. How do you feel as 'youngster' between your 'old' heroes?

You know, most of the time I was dealing with the pragmatic reality of just making the band work. But just below the surface was a 13 year old fan boy who just couldn’t believe I was re-creating the music of my childhood with some of the very people who had brought it to life in the first place. On that level it was amazing. There were moments in the middle of shows where you thought ‘How the hell did this happen?’
In the end the most important role I played in the group was that of facilitator. I actually had to make the idea a reality.

Why were you accepted by them in the first play, never having been part of an incarnation of KC?

    Well it’s a long story.
When I was working as a songwriter in the 80’s my publisher thought it would be a good idea to put me in touch with Peter Sinfield. Peter had become a very successful pop lyrist by this time writing songs for very big and commercially successful artists. When I met Peter I wasn’t that interested in writing with him I just wanted to have lunch and hang out and ask lots of nerdy questions about King Crimson. We became friends and over the years have managed just 2 songs. The second being his re-write of ‘Pictures of a City’ now entitled ‘Pictures of an Indian City’ on my new record.
After the launch of the Epitaph box set in’97 (which Peter invited me to, and I bumped into Mike Giles daughter Amanda who I had met in the 80’s when she worked at Stiff records. We are now married with 2 children) There was a plan to reform the original band for an album and some shows. This fell apart and Robert suggested something similar with John Wetton instead of Greg. This also fell apart.
Pete Sinfield wanted to take the idea on and had an idea for a big one off event with a kind of King Crimson Orchestra. A basic band with lots of Crimson related guests. They needed a guitar player, as Robert didn’t want to be involved. Peter knew I was a big fan and also that I was capable of playing some of Roberts more difficult part’s, so asked me to do it.
This also, obviously, didn’t happen. Then Mike Giles, who I’d met some years previously but was now seeing more often as I was going out with his daughter and playing on his (still unreleased) solo album, also had the intention of starting a Crimson related band.
Numerous rehearsals and line up’s were arranged, but non-came off. Except one with Ian MacDonald and Pete Giles. It wasn’t great, but there seemed to be enough to suggest that it might work. It was decided to ask Mel if he felt like being involved, which I was very keen on as I was a very, very big fan of his.
Still it didn’t look like this would be any more than just an idea too.
At this point I decided that if this was going to happen, then someone has to make it happen. So I drafted in various contacts, crew, management, and agency and began to finance it myself.

Thanks, that was informative. I went to one of the Epitaph signing sessions at an HMV store, so I have the box set signed by all the original members. But I don't think Pete Sinfield was there, he must have only been in the UK or something. Still a very cool event, meeting the whole original band!

I saw 21st Century Schizoid Band I a small club in Boston when Ian Wallace was one drums. Excellent show. Peter Giles' technique is perfect. One of the most relaxed and fluid performers I have ever seen. Effortless.

Having enjoyed a KC concert a few years ago and several Live performances of indiv songs at their youtube from those approx times, both featuring Jakko on vocals, I know what he did/brought in those times was great and interesting, except...I don't enjoy what he did to Indiscipline's vocals here -- the first time I heard this I switched it off 10-15 seconds after the vocals started:

On the one hand, I really like what Jakko did with the song. But on the other, I have serious reservations about this band presenting those lyrics at all, as they are very personal to Adrian. Considering the strained relationship between Adrian and the 2010s version of the band, it seems in poor taste--unless Adrian did explicitly okay it, which would surprise me.

Larks' Tongues in Aspic is my personal favourite King Crimson album. The album is exactly 50 years old today. I wrote a review of it: https://pienemmatpurot.com/review-ki...in-aspic-1973/

OK, so apparently at the moment no KC studio albums before Discipline are available on the streaming service Amazon Prime Unlimited. Hmm.

Nice review. It's my favorite KC album also and one of my favorite album covers ever.

Not a day goes by where I regret being a physical cd buyer.
I get people that are streamers. But just not my thing

I'm done buying the 14th version of the same album. I prefer in my dotage to have millions of albums and songs available to me whenever I want to listen to them without the need for storage.

But as you can see, you can't have them all available to you. Or at least not the 70s Crimson. So how do you listen to those albums?

Most responsible people these days own 2-3 physical copies of each KC release.

I've got an autographed poster of the Epitaph image with all members, except Fripp. i've also got a bunch of Crimson autographs, including a les paul guitar with the whole band at the time from a auction at the Electric Factory in Philly.

Except when Apple decides your iTunes collection is too big! They are blocking 120 Gigs of my library from an update last fall. Apparently, they are comparing Their Library to Your Library and blocking anything they think is bogus. The blocked items seem to be random recorded before 1995. I have to Reload all the affected CD's to see if Apple will accept them. This "blocking" doesn't happen to my iPods and a NEW iPad bought this week. Only my iPhone is affected. Yes....I have 45,000 songs in iTunes....but I also have the Cd's in case online overlords take control.

MusicBee is the way to go. I hate itunes. But, if it works for you, then giddy up. As to CDs...in Canada, with our weak dollar and the increased shipping rates, have become WAY too expensive with the amount of new music that I buy every year.

Surprised there hasn't been screaming and drama about this: Fripp names the top rank of KC drummers as Giles and Harrison. Even more surprised that Bruford linked to this statement approvingly from his latest YouTube vid.

You have not heard anything like Vostok Lake, nor do you know anyone who has.

Got a pleasant surprise when I received notification that the local art centre in Exeter is showing the Crimson documentary in its cinema on Wednesday - will be fun to see it a big screen with an audience!

I guess it shows Bruford is not too much of an egotist, but then I never had the impression that he was.

    Interesting piece, thanks for link.
