I wouldn't sweat it... there are some odd choices in that list, let alone in the choice of album for a group... (Trilogy?? Ballerman?? Cyclone?? Photo Of Ghosts??)
my music collection increased tenfolds when I switched from drug-addicts to complete nutcases.

I was born in '63 (for a brief shining moment JFK and I were on the planet at the same time). My pick of that stellar year in order:

    Dylan, Freewheelin'

    Solti, Wagner: Siegfried

Mingus, The Black Saint and the Sinner Lady

    Bohn, Mozart: Cosi fan tutte

    Ellington, Afro-Bossa

the Deutsche Grammophon issue of Stockhausen, Gesang der junglinge / Kontakte

Karajan, Beethoven Symphonies w/- Berlin Philharmonic (still my reference for these)

    Judy Henske, Judy Henske

and two nostalgia trips: records I remember my mother playing when I was pre-school:

Joan Baez, In Concert, Vol. 2

Peter, Paul and Mary, In the Wind

Does it matter that this waste of time is what makes a life for you?

Five albums from the 70s that I would recommend to a new listener of Prog that define the genre:

    1) Ethos - Open Up
    2) Yes - Close To The Edge
    3) Nektar - A Tab in the Ocean
    4) King Crimson - Starless and Bible Black OR Lark's Tongue In Aspic
    5) Rush - Hemispheres

Don't ask me why, but I am very partial to Ethos "Open Up" album (1976 I think)

The whole thing is available on YouTube...here are the first two songs

I would argue anyone born before 1970 doesn't consider Rush progressive rock. They were ten years too late, and rather more of a 'stadium band.'

This is a real odd choice. I think it's ok, but I prefer their first album, even though there are some cringe worthy moments (Everyman). I'll have to pull out the vinyl again.

Have you heard the thrid album "Relics"? It's basically pre-Ardour recordings. An early version of Pimp City is on it.

I was born in 1962 and first saw Rush in 1976. At that time, they were definitely progressive rock. Rush did evolve away from this style over time.

I was born before 1970. Rush is definitely prog. If Rush isn't prog, there's loads of stuff mentioned here that IMO is definitely prog but no one ever questions. Most Kansas, Genesis albums like ATTWT and ATOTT. If Rush is only a "stadium band," then are you saying Rush is no more prog than Winger, or Journey, or Def Leppard?
