Why is it whenever someone mentions an artist that was clearly progressive (yet not the Symph weenie definition of Prog) do certain people feel compelled to snort "thats not Prog" like a whiny 5th grader?

I like the first four Ars Nova discs, but YMMV on these. I also like Bi Kyo Ran, but they are very like King Crimson. Parallax, their second album, is pretty worthy despite the obvious KC comparisons.

Altered States-how to describe the music?.....avant-prog electric trio music(guitar, bass, drums), improvised(the group calls it "spontaneous composition").
The groups' last three cd releases are 'state of the art'-Bluffs,BluffsII and Live In Tokyo are kick ass good.Live In Tokyo,particularly so,imo.

Based on the bands in your list, Rovo is a band you might want to try. They are all over the map- with strong space rock tendencies.

Underrated “proggy prog”: Providence, Outer Limits, TEE, Wappa Gappa.
For all-out avant-garde synth-plus-female-vocals-plus-whatever freakout, definitely check out Wha-ha-ha
For 70s stuff, try Sadistic Mika Band. I seem to be the only one on this board who really likes them, probably as folks are looking for unadulterated prog, and prog was just one facet of their very dense sound. First of all, they were probably the first “post-modern” rock band, years before that was “a thing,” alongside prog, we also get some hard rock, glam rock, 50s retro, Japanese traditional/folk, funk, calypso, jazz fusion, general weirdness and who knows what else thrown into the stew. They were a true original. Start with Black Ship (黒船).

For anyone who likes Machine and the Synergetic Nuts, I'd recommend Morsof and their sole album (that I'm aware of), "Heap." It ranks better than the first Machine... album but not quite as good as their excellent second.
For some more interesting rock/avant/electronic/Krautrock music, check out The Boredoms and their excellent spin off OOIOO.

Kenso and Providence for me. Never really got into Ars Nova. There's tons and tons of Japanese music to discover, I've really not scratched the surface...

I've never been big on Japanese symph, myself. One album not yet mentioned that is at the top of my list is Far East Family Band Parallel World. A pretty amazing psychy/space trip that's more in line with a lot of the mid 70s electronic Krautrock. A real standout.

As far as I can tell, there is no such thing.
I've always loved this guy - I guess it's up in the air whether or not you can call him prog but it's the sort of real expansive, quasi-orchestral, incredibly creative work that a lot of people around here dig
