My wife says I'm a media junkie but compared to some of you guys my CD/LP collection is "manageable". And yeah, we've got lots of DVDs. But when we were down and out a few years ago there was a massive purge, from music to books to comics to movies. I miss some it but it had to be done. Now we're flush again, with a place with lots of room, and my wife says she could give a damn how much money I spend on books and CDs. I've been somewhat slow this year, but last year I probably had enough stuff come in the mail to give the postal truck suspension damage.

Or, and pint beer glasses have become a thing with me. That reminds me, I need to pour a beer.

So, just because I got 50 family photos stocked in a cigar box (I'm not even sure where I put it last) , it would be a collection???
my music collection increased tenfolds when I switched from drug-addicts to complete nutcases.

Yes. You keep your collection in an album. Trane keeps his family photo collection in a box.

    That's preposterous
I have all three albums from NeBeLNeST and enjoy them quite a bit actually. Hoping for a fourth album some day. Loved their set at Nearfest.

I think if you own porn that you're planning to beat off to eventually but haven't got around to yet, or porn you can't beat off to because unsealing it will devalue it, yes.

    n.

    2. A group of objects or works to be seen, studied, or kept together.
    3. A line of products produced for one season, as those developed by a designer: promoted the summer collection in the store window.
    4. An accumulation; a deposit: a collection of dust on the piano.
my pics are stored together for practicability reasons, but not to be shown or studied... they're not displayed - unlike my music and books, which is rather hard to do otherwise, unless I buy specific furniture (discussed in Tom's recent storage thread)

Actually, I'll be quite happy to buy their (unlikely >> I'm pretty sure they've broken up)) fourth album (as long as they didn't veer metal, disco or techno)... maybe an archives live album (Steve F???)....
but am I proud of having their albums... or Genesis' or Crimson's.... Nope, I don't draw any spoecific pride in ownin tons of CDs or books

Strangely enough.... no-one has even brought up my signature, where I call my piles of music discs a "collection"

I've got an unopened, intact 6-pack of Billy Beer. Is that considered a collection of Billy Beer? Wish I had sold it to years ago when people were asking $3000; though, I doubt anyone was buying it at that price.

Looking forward to my day in court.

Definitely a collection, because would you really want to open it after all these years? I remember seeing cans of it, though I never drank it, too young at the time.

Not a collection. A collection has to have more than one thing; multiples of the same thing like a 6-pack don't count. It is, however, an excellent addition to a collection of beer.

    I collect bills.

When I get a final notice I figure my collection of that particular debt is complete.
Does that make me a completest?

[opens Trane's Fridge]"Hey Trane, nice Beer Collection you've got here"[/closes fridge] "Hey Trane, nice Single Malt collection you've got there...can I, uh, ....."see" it?"

I think what people are "bristling at" is not what the "collection" is called, but the underlying motivation. In other words, do we "collect," or form a "Collection," out of a clearly understood desire to have a "collection?" Are we "Collectors?" Or are we lovers of some sort of object or other...i.e., are we "Music lovers?"

To others, my ridiculous amount of CD's, CDR's, vinyl, cassettes, is a "collection." I don't usually think of it that way...but others have called it that, and I accept that definition. Same with my books--I have a LOT of poetry books, for example, but I don't "collect" like some do...I know people who have multiple editions of the same book, for example....or people who have copies of books (or music media) they don't value highly, subjectively.

I used to have a lot of pipes--tobacco pipes--and I hung with collectors--some people wouldn't even smoke a new, un-broken-in, pipe...while others would be baffled by that sort of thinking. "You've got a 1959 Dunhill Billiard and it's not been smoked? What are you thinking, man, pack that thing up and let's go!"
