I was listening to "Yesshows" in headphones today - something I've never done before. One thing that jumped out at me was that "The Gates of Delirium" is mixed in nearly mono from 10:18 to 12:50. Supposedly, the entire performance is from one show (Cobo Hall in Detroit), so why this glaring shift in the mix for that section?

I don't know. I haven't heard it in a long time. I think Yesfans would be a better place to post this question though. Yes will inevitably pop up here but I think YF is better suited for such a specialized question like yours.
Maybe there was a gap on the multi-track, and Squire (who was the one who put Yesshows together) had to use a patch from another source, presumably a tape made off the mixing desk or a monitor mix, and the only thing available was in mono.Originally Posted by J. D. Mack

I've never noticed any difference in all the times I've listened to that song.. now I've got to put the head phones on and see what you are referring to.. I personally have always loved that version of Gates.. I know Moraz has been quoted as saying there were plenty of better versions from that tour...
Just listened to this version today as well as the one from "Open the Gates" Roosevelt 1976... and I gotta say the Roosevelt show smokes the version they released on Yesshows.. I've got several other versions.. wonder why Chris choose the Cobo Hall show..?
Back to your original question.. I didn't notice any change of sound... could be I was a bit distracted when the 10:18 section came up..

Did a late night headphones jam of "Gates" from Yesshows....honestly it must he at least 15 years since I heard this version. Wow, the boys are on fire on that...I always thought Yesshows got slagged on over the years, but that particular performance is totally killer. Howe is so enjoyable to listen to, as is the Fishman. Alan White slays too. So tight.
^Yesshows is all about that and 'Ritual' for me.

It seems like it might be an intentional thing on (the producer) Squire's part since the part leading up is where the guitar is leading the way, but from 10:18 to 12:50 it's the bass, and then back to guitar for a bit.
I've always loved Yesshows. I'm sure I've played it more than Yessongs.
Maybe the version is a composite anyway. I have a boot of the show it is purported to come from and it doesn't sound like the same performance. Certainly Jon's speech at the start is completely different.

This is some very detail-oriented listening and I'm quite impressed. I've also never noticed this effect. Gotta fire up the headphones tonight.
I loved Yesshows in high school. The versions of Gates and Ritual on it really smoke.

Yesshows is definitely better than Yessongs imo.
I went back and listened. Great performance! I was actually at this show at Cobo in 1976. I don't think it's a composite, just a scene change to some instruments that are more center in the mix that gives that impression. Probably a production choice when mixing. Listen to just the bass and drums, those don't change, just the instruments around them. That section is still stereo, just less info in the left and right channel. Wider stereo comes back when they go to different guitars and keys. Also possible they went back and re-tracked and cleaned up a few things in the mix so parts might not sound exactly like a bootleg recorded in the audience.
And as others have said, Squire and White are really explosive and tight and all fired up it seems. We take Howe for granted. I like his tone on this live stuff it's less piercing than the original Relayer sound he had with the telecaster possibly.
As far as the mix goes, I wish they put Wakeman up just a little bit more and Squire down a little bit but it all depends on what you're listening to it with.
^ Wakeman's not on Gates and Ritual (if that's what you're saying). I take it Squire was making sure he and White were much more to the fore than on Yessongs.
I find it hard to believe the mono-sounding section of Gates was an artistic decision rather than one borne out of a technical problem. No reason for Squire or anyone else to do it.
Another great (albeit very different) Gates is on the Symphonic Live album....the Soon section might be the best out of the entire lot. You can't beat a symphony orchestra behind you with harps when Jonnie is singing that ethereal amazingness.
Just listened to the Yesshows 'Gates' for the first time in I'll bet 40 years. That version of the band was amazing - goosebumps.

Happy with what I have to be happy with.
I played that 20 year old DVD recently through my new Blu Ray & DAC set up and it sounded amazing. Great performance too, this was the second coming of classic Yes.
Me too, it sounded way better than I remembered, Howe is on fire and the huge roar of approval from the crowd at the finale is awesome.
You are correct, sorry it's Moraz on the Gates and Ritual.
Just guessing of course, but maybe he liked the way the crowd went ballistic at Cobo Hall?

I love the extra music Howe incorporated into that first part of Ritual on Symphonic Live. Really a great version too. Yesshows Cobo Hall will always be tops though.
