Played Bob's first album last night. Great album. I really love pre-electric Bob.

I've been working through the official bootlegs discs and there's so damn much material it's just staggering. Volumes I-III. Volume 8, and Volume 11 are going to take me years to study and dissect. Or just play loud enough to drive my wife freaking nuts.

I'm still digging the Bootleg series. It's hard to think of many artists who have done as well digging up some truly great archival material.

And there is more to come. I do wish they could get away from the huge sets and do something on a slightly smaller scale for a bit. Blood on the Tracks will get the bootleg series treatment soon. That should be smaller. The gospel years is another one that will come out eventually. Columbia and Jeff Rosen probably have ideas for others as well.

I have about 8 of his regular releases and 2 compilations. I think Blood On The Tracks is far and away his best work ever. Blonde On Blonde is pretty good, but I never would call it a masterpiece as I've heard some people refer to it.
Another one for obsessives like me. Not a bad price for the number of discs...

I'm already in. Removing VAT, the box will cost $150 at Amazon UK. Not bad at all for 36 discs that have never been heard (at least, commercially) before...and of which only five come from audience sources. The rest are either soundboard recordings or professional recordings by CBS. So 31 good to great (I expect) discs plus five perhaps ok? A bargain!
You have to put BoB in the context of its time. Nobody but nobody was making music like that.
But that said, like you I prefer Blood on the Tracks (and Planet Waves). Any Dylan record with The Band is top of my list too, which makes 1965-66 are Dylan still up there for me....plus the Compete Basement Tapes from a couple years ago. Some amazing gems in there.
Some day, the Newport recordings will come out. Or did they already? I've had it for years, but it would be nice if everyone else had access to it.

Oh I definitely do. IMO no album that contains "Visions of Johanna" (IMO the greatest rock song ever written), Stuck Inside, Sad Eyed Lady, Leopard Skin Hat (a LOL song every time), sooner Or Later, Most Likely, I Want You and Just Like a Woman... can be anything less.
Add to that the sublime performances that go from sneer to guffaw to awe to desperation to reverence (at least a couple of times in the same song)

They have been released on DVD and Bluray. There's no official audio only release, though.
Hell, you can go further back than that with his "Biograph" release, which pretty much set the standard.

Agree that Blood is superb.
I was listening to Street Legal the other day. What a fine album that is - one that doesn't get enough love IMO. To me it's very much of a pair with Slow Train Coming (another great album but admittedly his last for a while after). The lyrics and performances on Street Legal seem to me like someone on a steep cliff. As a fan I'm glad for his sake that he got some (temporary) refuge on the "train to Jordan".

For me, Street Legal is the last album with the real magic touch IMHO. That was a big seller in the UK at the time.

I have. I'm pretty indifferent to his latter-day output as I'm sure I've said before, and that includes that album. He gets 5 star reviews for everything he does these days, meanwhile many a critic slaughtered Street Legal back in the day.

^ But Bob has always done what Bob has wanted to do. His recent work is no exception. that's part of his appeal for me. None of his stuff is for everyone.
