60 Great Albums You Probably Haven't Heard Of

Although I doubt that applies to the PE community The best one on the list to me is #38--King Sunny Ade and His African Beats--Juju Music. That's a sweet smoking album. Great place to start if you want to sample some ethic, African music. http://www.vulture.com/2013/11/60-gr...ent-heard.html

I have The Congos' one, was lucky to find the Blood and Fire reissue very cheaply (it's long out of print) and it's a wonderful album that I've been meaning to play again. For any interested parties, try out the track 'Congoman' which I can only describe as space-reggae!

I have something by Cymande too. That's it.

    One's that I've heard of -

    Les Baxter - The Passions
Mel Torme - Mel Torme sings Fred Astaire

That's it. Nothing past the 1950's.
Duncan's going to make a Horns Emoticon!!!

I used to listen to the first Jobriath and RR Kirk a lot!

I have the Les Baxter on 10" discs.

Fully support the inclusion of Latin Playboys and Freedy Johnson.

As far as I can tell, I've heard of everything on that list I would give half a shit about.

That Jorge Ben album is really good. Chances are you’ve already heard “Ponta de lança africano (Umbabarauma),” as David Byrne reissued it in the late 80s (complete with animated music video) on the first Beleza tropical compilation, and it turned up in TV commercials since then. But the whole album is worth hearing.

The Jobriath album is an enjoyable Bowie-cum-Jagger knockoff, but “as good—or better—than Bowie’s own records”? Whoever wrote that was smoking crack, it’s the only explanation.

I'll admit I don't know most of these(but I seriously doubt most people on here do either). I do however own "fantasma" by Cornelius which I can definitely vouch for. It's a very proggy indie album that I recommend to those who like stuff leaning towards experimental indie.

I only heard three or four from that list '(including Sister Thorpe >> my dad had a few albums of her), but the best one on that list is Cymande... If you're into Osibisa and Mandrill, these guys are for you...

3 albums ... though the debut is their best, with the second being their second best...

I used to have it when I had a vinyl collection. It's the only one on that list I've ever heard, though I've heard a couple of other Jorge Ben albums than the one listed.

I've heard and like the following:
    Cymande
    Roland Kirk's Volunteered Slavery
    Jorge Ben Africa/Brasil ( A stone cold classic--essential IMO!)
Fishbone Truth and Soul (one of my faves from that period of my life)
    King Sunny Ade-Juju Music

    I have
    Volunteered Slavery
    JuJu Music

I have heard of and have an interest in
    Cornelius
    Fishbone
Machito (I didn't know about Kenya but had a song of his on some 50s Jazz CD that I liked)

I have heard of but am not overly interested in

    Moondog
    Latin Playboys
    Youssou N'Dour

    I never really heard of
    Jorge Ben
    Jobriath (more Bowie than Bowie!?!)

    11. Joe Tex, Buying a Book (1969)
Joe Tex sang better than all but a few soul men and was funnier than the lot of ’em. This gutbucket-funky album may be his finest.

    YEAH!!!!

I've heard them all. Iris, btw, is great. Her hubby, Greg Brown, ain't too shabby either.

Replace Jorge Ben by Moondog, and those are the ones I heard

I heard a couple Youssou albums, but I couldn't tell if it was that precise one, though

I miss the Bridgeton Folk Festival for stuff such as seeing Iris Dement, Patti Larkin, Dar Williams, Iain Matthews...it was within walking distance of my home and inexpensive enough.

I've heard of most of these ( due to a lot of reading of album reviews ) and are familiar with many of the artists. But, do I actually own even a single one of the albums listed? It's a resounding no. ;-)

One of my all-time faves.......never seems to make any lists. But I love Beau Brummels "Bradley's Barn."

Anyone else? Man, that album is chock full of catchy-ness.

I'm familiar with the Beau Brummels, and have their greatest hits on vinyl, which is good. I've not heard Bradely's Barm, but I'd like too.

Bradley's Barn is very Country-fied. And I'm not much of a Country Music fan...but this album is a collection of great, great songs, performed superbly. Love it!
