I think you might be. In the tune I hear no similarities at all, a constant drive & beat yes, but surely having a permanent beat through a song is not ripping off another song with a permanent beat through it. Otherwise you could say ALL dance tracks rip each other off.
This popped up on my random rotation at home and I think it fits

Has this gem from Peter Godwin been mentioned yet?
How about this homegrown act, Combo Audio?
And of late, I’ve really fallen in love with the Nuit du samedi et matin du dimanche album by Japan’s Takashi Sato. There’s something exotic and irresistible about his approach:
Confirmed Bachelors: the dramedy hit of 1883...
Have marked on youtube these two cover bands doing 80s pop synth pretty well incl maybe some lesser known songs:
Radio Romantic, Divided By Zero
The second one does Enjoy the Silence nicely but then you discover when you hear the same vocalist do Toto's Africa that he doesn't really have a very strong vocals, which is fine depending on the song
Here's a good cover of Maniac

Excellent. Was reminded of this from 77ish. Most definitely Synth Pop.

couldn't the Cars fit into this category? i thought Greg Hawkes added a lot to their sound with his synth fills..
(my fave from them)

When I think of synth pop the only band who comes to mind is Depeche Mode, who I'm not a really big fan of.

I'm a huge fan of dark synth stuff ala 80's horror movies. Carpenter Brut does this to perfection. (Thanks to Battema for this recommendation)

^^ Yeah...I'm a big fan of the synthwave revival. It is for me what I think a lot of newer prog/psych bands are for some of you. Whether it's a weirdo post-punk thing or something that sounds like the exit music for a John Hughes film, there's a little bit of everything in there. Just some random picks (in alphabetical order, to avoid ranking silliness):
Carpenter Brut: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QZUxLq7I-lU

(for those who like connections...SURVIVE includes Kyle Dixon & Michael Stein, who broke semi-big with their Stranger Things music. SURVIVE frequently includes the main theme in their shows).
In terms of the "vintage" stuff...love Blue Nile, all the oddball stuff that Bureau B has been reissuing, the early 80's Schnitzler in particular, Dolby...most of it, to be honest. And there was a LOT of it.
If you're actually reading this then chances are you already have my last album but if NOT and you're curious:

Just What I Needed starts with guitar but much synth arrives --- some good covers of it:

Thomas Dolby also had a song called one of our submarines which was good. It was probably his second most well known after SBMWS.

Would this be considered pop-synth?
