There's an amazing amount of quality music connected with Cardiacs. Looking forward to hearing the new Knifeworld album and am hoping for another North Sea Radio Orchestra album before too long. Anyone know if they have plans to record anything in the near future? 'I A Moon' was my favourite record of 2011.
One great band that don't seem to have been mentioned here are Shrubbies. It's Sharon and Craig from NSRO's old band with ex-Cardiacs Dom Luckman and Sarah Smith. They only put out one album (produced by Tim) that i'd say is less NSRO sounding and more Cardiacs-like bendiness.

That's Sarah Smith singing on 'Carefree Clothes'. She saxes on the rest. 'Knives' is an incredible song, but it doesn't seem to be linkable anywhere.
Shrubbies were a terrific band. It was so lovely to see Dom back behind the kit. I really think he's one of THE great drummers. Incredible feel. Not a beat or fill out of place. Knives is a favourite, that whole psychedelic 'wig out' at the end is beautiful but the whole album is lovely. I think there's still a few copies left.
Craig 'heard' the tune to Memphis In Texas in a dream.
There's isn't any real connection -someone mentioned Stump (which was Kev Hopper's first band) in a list of Cardiacs related bands but then Kavus said he knew Kev Hopper and he'd only heard Cardiacs quite recently. I used this conversation to plug what I think is great but little known album, that's all. Kev's original idea in forming Stump was to fuse the type of music made by Captain Beefheart and Brand X. They composed tightly written tunes with odd time signatures and Kev's elastic bass playing and added an Irish singer - they somehow got lumped in with a lot of new-wave bands they had no affinity with and so only achieved a cult following (see also Cardiacs). After they broke up Kev has done a series of odd solo albums varying from treated bass, samples, improvised laptop use, musical saw etc, before returning to his fretless bass for this latest release. Yes, Prescott does refer to politician John Prescott who is depicted on the cover doing some sewing at an old fashioned sewing machine. No idea why but its a great picture.

Listening to the Shrubbies album again for the first time in ages. I'd completely forgot that Sharon plays bass as well as sings. Some of the basslines remind me of The Pixies.
'Knives' is a helluva track innit? The build to that final scream and the post rock climax really ends the album on a powerful note.
I think many of these bands and albums are quite rare now and in desperate need of reissue. I'm just glad i got most of them when i could. Is the Monsoon Bassoon album still available? Another Tim Smith produced 'lost classic' along with the first Stars In Battledress (haven't got the new one yet), actually the opening instrumental 'I Spook The Language' is probably the most Smith-like composition i've ever heard by another musician. It's effing beautiful.

That long since out of print album by The Monsoon Bassoon plus a whole other album's worth of EP's, singles, unreleased stuff and rareties has all been digitised. It need re/mastering but I need about two or three weeks to really get the whole thing sorted in terms of artwork, co-ordination etc.
It's been ready to get on with for a couple of years but I've yet to find the time.
It will happen, I just don't know when!

Received William D. Drake-s/t cd yesterday and i'm digging it big time.Charming tunes,wonderful playing.

You cardiacs junkie! Love it. I don't have this one, but do have "Rising", which is nifty.
I myself received 5 more discs yesterday courtesy of Uncle Steve - Seaside, Spratley's, Songs for Ships, On Land, and OceanLand. Trying to complete the collection a little at a time. Visa loves me when I try to attempt such activities. Can't tell you how much I love the tune 'Big Ship'. My kids are even starting to bounce their heads when I crank it and air guitar/air sing.
William D. Drake-s/t is on it's way to me now, looking forward to it, The Rising Of The Lights is a lovely album.
I've got OceanLandWorld on it's way in the same shipment. Spratleys Japs is great.
