Not "transitional" - it was simply the first line-up after Magma reformed in 1996, not having toured except for one-off performances, since 1983.
I saw them in Lyon on that tour.
Most of the line-up, apart from Bussonnet and Goubert (who has recently re-joined), was from a Magma cover band called Don't Die.

Great concert, I used to have it on VCR so saw it long long ago...
I remember it had a killer Kohntarkosz, for some reason I remember it was aired on Arte or Mezzo channel, I don`t recognize this channel logo.

Fair enough. In terms of their official recordings, the male singer appears on one track of the single (credited more as a guest), and the guitarist and one keyboardist never made it to an official recording, so it was quite new to me.

Yes, in terms of it sounding like a "real" band, it took until the arrival of the other One Shot guys (James MacGaw and Emmanuel Borghi) in the Summer of 1997, which was the foundation of the group (along with Vander, Bussonnet and S.Vander/I.Feuillebois) for the next 10 years, with the Paganotti siblings making it sound even more complete in the 2000s. Really miss that line-up. (Admittedly I haven't had a chance to catch the new line-up.)

Thanks for confirming that. I remember hearing that Zebehen Strain De Geustaah effectively hired a tribute band to be the new Magma, but never knew if it was true or not.

Yes it was - in fact that band (which also included drummer Daniel Jeand'heur, later of One Shot) was the first to dust off Vander's unrecorded epic "Kohntarkosz Anteria", prompting Vander to resurrect it with Magma later. Some of its members (most notably the Déat couple) were also in Les Voix de Magma from 1992. MacGaw and Bussonnet were also initially in a Magma tribute band (Zukunft) in the late 1980s/early 1990s, which came to Magma's attention when Julie Vander briefly joined them.

For me it's the definitive lineup because I saw them 9-10 times in that format.

In Chicago, in 1999, Antoine had joined, but not yet Himiko- so we had 3 singers- Antoine, Stella and Zab. The second two times I saw them was with Herve and Stella and Zab.

For now, I wonder what the future will bring. It is over 50 years for CV and SV, and near 30 for Zab. How much longer will the fire burn? Is there any new music to be had, what with a new and not so young cohort of musicians and (younger, mainly) singers?

It did change. He said this won't be his final record, but I'm not that hopeful with the latest lineup change.

I would like to think if you bring in an entire new cohort of musicians you will do more with them than play the same material you placed with the old. With a half-year hiatus now, perhaps new music will come. I do not know much about Jimmy Top outside of the obvious, but the other musicians are world-class talents. With Goubert, you have drums and keys and voice and Eliaz is mutlitalented as well. And all of the new singers are vocalese experts. Perfect for Magma and its convoluted vocal lines.

I just watched the Triton DVD with Zess and now I'm actually happy that the studio version is so different. I like the dvd version, but I think it was a good decision to change it up in the studio.

I'm currently watching all 6 Triton DVDs, one each night (not in order), and then I'll watch the Offering dvd when that comes(just ordered last night)

Watched vol 3 & 4 so far...after not watching them in a few yrs.

I'm on DVD Epok V, and I really think his yellow Gretch drums are a better sounding drum set. It looks like he's using mostly the same cymbals plus an added China cymbal. And the highlight of his cymbals to me is the hi hat that looks like a 13 inch top on a 14 inch bottom. It gives it a great sound. If I get around to recording my zeuhl influenced project, I'm gonna do that too...I've tried it before and is cool, but not for all styles.
I should be finished with watching these by the time my Offering DVD gets here on monday.
Can't wait to see that!

What are peoples thoughts on Herve?
I'm not sure I like his voice? It's like he's too trained as a singer? Almost too operatic and not raw enough?
Stella actually gets better, and I thought she was already damn good before.
Christian is a lot more solid on Epok V than on the first 4 DVDs. Not that he 2as bad before, but he's just a lot more tight on this dvd.

I like Herve a lot. He is a fine singer, and I believe he teaches voice when he can. He is also a member of the Celestial Q-Tips, an acapella group.



Stella remains a remarkable singer. And in those rare cases where Isabelle gets solo time, she is also superb.
